Dvd Drive Not Working

When I put a DVD or CD in my PC's DVD drive absolutely nothing happens. When I look at My Computer the drive does not show up. I have tried numerous discs because I thought it might, at first, be the disc. But, it appears to be the driver. It has worked fine before. How might I troubleshoot this problem and fix it?

Which version of Windows are you running? Does the DVD drive show in Device Manager?

    Win 10 HP (64 bit).

    No, it does not.

Was the Win 10 an upgrade from an earlier version of Windows or did the HP come with Win 10 pre-installed? I ask because sometimes the optical (DVD) drive disappeared after an upgrade to Win 10. In Device Manager, right click the DVD/CD Rom drives header and select scan for hardware changes and see if the DVD drive shows up then.

If it does, this page may help resolve your issue:

mdonah, I believe that mark59, when he typed Win 10 HP (64 bit) meant Home premium and not an HP brand computer.

Looking back at a previous post he made
    http://forums.majorgeeks.com/index.php?threads/annoying-popup.315903/
the computer might be an Acer.

Looking back further, if it is the same computer, it appears to be an upgrade to Win 10
    http://forums.majorgeeks.com/index.php?threads/windows-10-software.307482/

Now all we need to do is wait until mark59, posts
    a) exact brand and model of computer
    b) if it was an upgrade
    c) when the drive stopped working because perhaps if he didn't turn off driver updates, some update might have broken the drive.

The thing about it is if he meant "Home Premium", there is no such version of Win 10.

It does seem, from his other posts, that it's an Acer AND was upgraded to Win 10 AND that some recent update, driver or other, crippled the optical drive.

On my one Dell that the optical drive disappeared from in a Win 10 upgrade, a clean install of Win 10 resolved the issue.

Hopefully Mark59 will come around and let us know if he still has the problem?

Yeah. Even though I linked him to a Hewlett Packard page, the info there may have helped with his Acer.

Thank you to everyone for their replies. I did not know I had so many. My Majorgeeks profile is set for me to receive instant emails notifying me of replies but this does not happen.

    1. When I typed 'HP' I meant Home Premium.
    2. However, the PC is a Hewlett Packard PC.
    3. Not knowing of all these replies I have not attempted the fix. I will do soon and report back on what happens.

Windows 10 does not have 'Home Premium' - just 'Home'

For the avoidance of doubt my operating system is: Microsoft Windows 10 Home (x64) Version 1607.

    There's also Education.

If you click "I don't have a Key" at the screen that asks for one, you're presented with four installation options:

    Pro
    Home (I presume multi-language)
    Home Single Language
    Education

(this is from a recently downloaded [3 days ago] Win 10 ISO created with the Win 10 Media Creation Tool)

Is this about your non-working DVD drive on this Win10 system or something else?
If it's about the DVD drive follow the guide mdonah linked you to in POST NUMBER 5.
