Which Code Is My Windows Key?

    Hello hello :)

    Quick question:
My Windows is bugging me to activate it. It came pre-installed with the laptop, and I ran Belarc to find the code. Here's the catch: It shows me 2 codes. Both are 5 x 5 digits, one ends with OEM, the other just numbers, but is between brackets.
How do I know, which code to use?

    Thank you, in advance :)

Which version of Windows came pre-installed?

If Windows 8.0 — 10 came pre-installed on the laptop, the Product Key is embedded in the UEFI (BIOS) and you shouldn't need to enter one. It should have activated almost as soon as you went online with the laptop. Something's amiss if you have to enter a Key for Window 8.0 — 10.

Win 8.1 was already on it.

As I stated in my reply, the Product Key is embedded in the UEFI and you shouldn't need to enter one for activation. It is an OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) Key that the Microsoft server should be able to detect.

Hm..I'll see what comes up next time. No idea where to find it right now, to activate that is.
Sure takes some getting used to, if you're used to XP for years lol.

Right click "This PC" and select Properties. Then go to the bottom where it says Windows Activation and see what it says.

I ran Belarc on my Windows 8.1 OEM installation (the laptop came with Windows 8.1 Core pre-installed). The Key that activated Windows has "AAOEM" in front of the actual Key (in parentheses).

Thank you, for your guidance :) Helps heaps when it comes to learning how Win 8 works.
It tells me it is activated, code included.

It hasn't asked to activate in a couple of days now. Laptop has been running long days actively, but it hasn't asked again.

Somehow, it did *shrugs* No idea what, why or how though. But, it is quiet at the front ;)
Big thank you, once more, for teaching me how to find it :)

And once again,it is at it...
When I go to the Activation page on the laptop it shows a snippet of a product code. That snippet, is different from the code that I found earlier.

Better to explain more clearly. Do you mean as you said at the beginning "My Windows is bugging me to activate it."?
Did you go to settings > update & security > activation and look there?

It is bugging me again to activate it, and I am honestly about to throw this thing under the next passing train.

As said, when I go the page it shows me a different code.
(Yes, it is in Dutch - sorry)

It's clearly telling you it is not activated.
I suggest you make a phone call to MS Support.

I guess I will have to.. since there are apparently 2 version of Win 8 on the laptop then...

I don't know how that's possible if you only have the OEM installation (the one that came with the computer).

You didn't need to re-install Windows 8.1 for some reason did you?

Nope, is the only installation that was on it. If I had 8.1 on a disc I would have updated the pc ;)
Kidding aside, I have not installed a new version or anything. I can't figure out what os going on either... it is odd and I never experienced this weird phenomena before, not in all the years I have my own computers.. Often (re-)build machines, (re-)installed windows and the works, but never have I seen this.

The only thing I can suggest is run Magical Jelly Bean Key Finder. It should read the Key from the UEFI and display it. The UEFI embedded Key is the one that will activate Windows 8.1. I'm at a loss as to why a different Key is showing.

I just ran Belarc and Magic Bean on this system and both found the same OS Key - this too was 8.1 at install and updated free to Win 10.
The OP should try again to activate with the key that they get, and if unsuccessful telephone Microsoft Support.

Well, that explains.. Never knew Win 8.1 used 2 (!!) codes for an installation.. Product ID and CD key o_O
They sure as heck aren't making it any easier... Microsoft - How to drive people batty *sigh*

Seriously should've considered an Linux or other OS, I think-.-

@MaxTurner That is just the problem, it shows me 2 codes (probably sorted it now). Ran the MagicBean and found the other one. Leaves me wondering why there are 2 codes, and one states activated and the other isn't.

All systems have both codes. On the system in question that requires activation, use the product key that shows, and if it doesn't work call MS.

I never recall having this problem with any 95, Millennium, XP installation ever. Probably forgot a few versions, but that doesn't matter.
