Problem Referencing Network (homegroup) Files From Windows Command

I am relatively new to using HomeGroup in Windows 10 and trying to use command line/Batch to manage selected files/directories on two home computers. I am having trouble in referencing them from the command line. Here is the layout:
    Computer names: Comp1 & Comp2
User name on both computers: USER1
Directory shared on both computers (read/write) with Homegroup: C:\Users\USER1
    Both computers on and awake.

When I open a command prompt on Comp1 and try to reference Comp2 files, for example:
    dir \\Comp2
I get the message: "The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect."

I can ping Comp2 from Comp1 and vice versa successfully.

What am I doing wrong or is there some setting in Windows or from the command line required to enable the command reference to the HomeGroup networked computers? Any help appreciated.

You don't type dir. just \\computername\share or just type \\Comp1 and explorer should show you all shares on that PC.
The other thing would be to map the share as a drive to make it easier to use.
In CMD type net use S: \\Comp1\share
It will map a drive as "S" in this case under My Computer.

I tried all of these. None worked.
    USERID1=USERID2 (user ID's on machine Comp1 & Comp2 respectively)

From Comp1, logged as USERID1, command line: \\Comp2
Error msg: "The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect."

    From Comp1 command line: \\Comp2\Documents
Error msg: "The network path was not found"

From Comp1 command line: net use S: \\Comp2\share
    Error msg:
    "System error 67 has occurred."
"The network name cannot be found"

Bear with me but I may be confused as to exactly what "share" represents. Is it a fully qualified directory path to a directory included in the share on Comp2 in HomeGroup for the USERID for the logged user on Comp1? I appreciate your help.

net use X: \\<computer name>\<share> works here. Note the space between X: and \\ and, as ever, exact syntax is imperative when using command. Both computers are Win 10.

I don't use Homegroup - prefer the old method of usernames and passwords.

It is the exact name of the shared folder you wish to access
