Your Thoughts About " Fake News "

The words are simple but the more I think about the possible meaning I began to wonder if we take it for granted that because the words are simple that the meaning is understood.

So I asked a few people lately what their meaning was of " Fake News " and I was surprised to find out that to say: " News that isn't ' real ' " does not simply explain what other people may think is meant by those words.

Thinking that there probably are a significant number of " smart " people in this forum I decided to open up this subject for discussion. One of the people I already asked this question to asked me if I would be surprised if no one replied....after pausing a moment of two I realized that she made a good point and realized that I didn't know the answer to her question.

Anyone want to share their thoughts?

It seems to many of the "news" reports are not totally factual but based on half-truths and sometimes not even close to true facts. Sadly people believe what they want to believe, especially if it goes along with their preconceived ideas.

The trouble with the news these days if the story is about big companies or political parties then any information is released via a PR firm or their own team of spin doctors so you never get the straight story making it difficult to believe anything or have an opinion based on fact. Both of my kids tell me they never watch the news on TV or read newspapers due to bias and reports that are often staged media stunts. They say they now get their information from social media and my son reckons if you take a line somewhere between the internet trolls, the conspiracy theorists and the actual story you might find something close to the truth.

Hmmmmm..... Trump talking about fake news...... with the crap emanating from his administration it is the pot calling the kettle black ;)

Oh well back to Caturday and lolcats for me.........

Seems to me it is 'reporters' not verifying sources, or facts.

Here is an early example, it has gotten much worse since then.

Or just a 'reporter' trying to advance their own belief instead of just objectively reporting the news.

And Max, Twitter is not a news site, and Rump is not a reporter. Any twitt can tweet on the twitter. ;)

I'm afraid it is now Fred. More people read Tweets than most newspapers or watch broadcast news stations. Good or bad it's a fact.
More people follow news on Social Media, including Facebook and Twitter, than any printed media at all (for which the numbers are now tiny) or TV or Radio News stations.
That's why almost every single Journalist and politician has an active Twitter account.
Every business worth its salt now deal with customer enquiries and customer services via Twitter (and Facebook) so I'm afraid you're in the land of nod if you think any of those Social Media sites are for 'twits'.

People can read whatever they want, but it is like the web, anyone can say anything. News should be objective. Opinion pieces should be listed as such.

Every day Social Media sites show evidence (often from 'nobodies') that your idea that CNN or Fox or Sky or the BBC or the bulk of printed mainstream news outlets are objective news sources is naive in the extreme.

Actually, I never said they are objective. Just that news should be objective, opinion should be like op-ed. Some people used to the the National Enquirer was 'news'. The 'news' has been going down hill for a long time, just recently it really kicked in the turbo.

Poor kitty must have over celebrated with too much catnip on Caturday o_O
