I'm doing it now. Do I need the Media Creation tool on the USB drive also? Along with the Win 10. Don't think so. But wanted to ask.

    Error message.

Windows cannot be installed to this drive. The selected drive has an MBR partition table. On EFI systems, windows can only be installed to GPT disks.

    What now?

I read Tom's sight. Deleting all the partitions would work on a home built. The H/P has one partition before the windows partition.. And 2 partitions after. 1st one is not showing anything other than healthy. Think that's the restore partition with H/P installed program. I:E: windows can't see the FAT type. Fat 12? Partitions 3 shows a H/P program for management and up-dates for this H/P computer. Partition 4 shows the program for testing & repair the H/P installed from the factory. I don't remember seeing any Fat types on 3 and 4.

I made the mistake years ago on a Compac. Back then you used a floppy to go to the f/disk program. Diskpart is what it is called now.
I saw on the f/disk program. Compac. A partition labeled Fat 16. Didn't know what it was so I deleted it. More space on the hard drive eh? Format the whole drive for larger size on the 512gb drive. :) Reinstall windows. Save changes an restart. I now have a deleted partition that told the computer it was a computer and not a toaster. It was now a toaster. I had the win disk ready to go. -> Showing my age.

From this sight found here, I went to this sight to download the Win 1607 that I have. -> http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/microsoft_windows_iso_download_tool.html It's on this computer ready to un-zip to sent to the USB.

What should I try 1st? This 1st and hope for the best? Think the microsoft is the one to do 1st.

Or on U-tube same issues and using disk-part. Many vidio's on this. ->

hI- To get it right-delete all existing partitions- then it should be go to install
locodave........ I HAD TO READ, AND RE-READ, AGAIN, AND AGAIN.
Your Windows 10 that you had was HOME version ? ........Unless you purchased professional version, and not an update through Microsoft.
You are now talking about Windows Enterprise edition- YOUR COMPUTER WILL NOT ACCEPT THAT, as it will not be licenced, unless you actually purchased it.

    From Microsft
    Your current edition of Windows
    Windows 10 edition
    Windows 7 Starter
    Windows 7 Home Basic
    Windows 7 Home Premium
    Windows 8/8.1
    Windows 8.1 with Bing
Windows 10 Home All will update to Windows 10 Home

So first of all, make sure you have the windows 10 home ticked to install. Then try as a fresh install. As plodr, and Max say, you may have to install version 1607, to get it to install. -------Then use the creators version iso to upgrade
You should not open the iso file, it has to be 'burnt 'as is.

locodave- the other partitions, and HP recovery included, would not work after a short time of updating to windows 10- sothey are redundant if doing a clean install.

  7. baklogic

    baklogic The Tinkerer

I should remind you that it might show all as unallocated, and then you might need to click create new partition to install on- obviously it will create more than one on the new installation which is normal

Thanks for reinforcing that baklogic - I thought in this thread we had all emphasised many times that the OP can only reinstall the existing version of Windows first. The OP can upgrade to the Enterprise version AFTER with a newly bought key.

Ok, I did have the win 7 pro version. On up-grade to win 10. Free-be. I did download the correct win 10 1607 version that I have from the up-grade. From that sight. It is in a zip file. Your saying I don't need to un-zip and send it to the USB? Why not un-zip and save it to the USB? Bootable.

Think your right on the partitions that have the restore on the disks I have with the computer to restore to win 7 or 8.1 are not working when I try it. If I can figure what partition has the tools to keep the H/P up-dated on downloads -> bios, installed drivers-controllers on H/P installed things. Keep it.

In other words. If no controller is installed on the motherboard. The program won't work. Nothing to associate to.

Earthlink. Yes I do read. Sometimes I do need to re-read and a few times to understand. Comprehend. I'm trying. K? My basic fault. I know this. Once I learned something. Sticks in the brain.

Then the prob I have. Old learning to do the new learning.

I don't think I need to buy a key as I already have the up-graded to the edition 1907.

Win 10 Pro and Win 10 ENTERPRISE are two different Windows 10 'editions' (numbers like 1607 are irrelevant. They are BUILDS that apply to every different 'edition').
To reinstall windows on your current system, you download from the Microsoft Download Centre, to the USB the EXACT Windows Edition you had, ie Win 10 PRO.
It is not a zip file.

And, no if you are simply reinstalling like for like you don't need a key as it will pick that up when you reinstall.

    Ok
I'll figure out what edition I have, go from there. Thank you.

    You're getting completely confused again.
Editions of Windows 10 are these, and only these:
    Home
    Pro
    Enterprise

(there are 3 others but they are not relevant to you)
It is Windows Pro that you said you had, and that is the edition you must reinstall.

    'Anniversary' and 'Creator's' are builds.

Sometimes it is hard to teach an old dog new tricks, and in a way, this seems to be part of the problem- The Media Creation tool makes the usb bootable- no messing, just run the tool, and direct the Iso to the usb, and voila-done, bootable (The only time you may have the problem of non bootable would be if the usb stick will not accept bootable media- I would check the usb manufacturer on that if you run Micosofts toolas I just said, and it does not boot in the other computer.
You should have an ISO file - NOT A ZIP FILE- that is why you have the Media Creation tool to make the Iso "unpack "to the USB stick, so that it is readily bootable.
Partitions , unless they contain DATA that you have saved will no longer be of any use in a clean install. The restore partition will still have the stuff in it to restore, but, as you now realise, will no longer work - (Windows 10 upgrade forced this after a short time-nasty, but that is what it did)
That link is good ,if you have to keep any partitions.
    https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us...e/741969ff-95e0-4d00-b55d-db3a75831cb8?auth=1
As you said you have saved the main stuff you need, then starting with a fresh single partition will clear any anomalies that might be causing you registration, and other faults that keep recurring.

I think the OP knows now that they can ONLY reinstall the Pro version they had - if you read the posts carefully they have said several times they had Pro.

It might not be reverent to this but when I was updating (KB 4019472) which was a big file for Windows 10 update which would not update causing me problems ,I realised when I put a new hard drive in as well as the last hard drive which had XP on , I put the windows 10 on the new one so I could keep all my files on the old hard drive then I found it was classed as G/ instead of C/ so I got windows 10 re instaled on with only one hard drive which became/and it work great with the updates

The OP is trying to do a clean reinstall so no not relevant really.

I used this, found here for the Win 10 home/pro and chose 64 bit. It does give you files that needed to be unzipped.

    -> http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/microsoft_windows_iso_download_tool.html

I have done nothing with it so far.

I also have the ISO file of Win 10 Pro from media creation. 64 bit. Saved it to the USB. I formatted the usb to 32bit before I used it. I read you don't format it to NTFS.

I'm going into bios and use the instructions to disable.

I'll let you know how it works out.

And yes, I was confused as I thought. I not only needed the Win 10 pro, but also needed the anniversary edition. With the build same #.

You are ignoring posts here again and again.
The Media Creation Tool was for you to download Windows from the Microsoft Download Centre - not from MG or any other website. It's not a zip file. You download it from the Microsoft site directly to the USB.
You have also been told by multiple posters multiple times that there is no particular special update (ie Anniversary or Creators) when you are doing a simple reinstall of Windows.
You either don't read the advice or you simply ignore it.

Yes I have that on the USB. Win 10 using that link before. Not ignoring posts. I just listed what I saw in the sight. Downloaded it to see what it included.

I disabled EFI in bios. Just on the hard drive . Used the USB with the ISO file made from the link. Went to load windows. I got the same error message. Went back into bios and disabled in EFI. The USB, C/D/DVD also.

Everything in Legacy is enabled. Re-booted. Get the repair message. I went to troubleshooting, advanced. I chose reset. It's doing it now.

If a RESET works fine, then great. In which case you could have done that to start with.
Not sure why you ended up with downloading zip files and whatever, as part of wanting to do a reinstall, which is different to a simple reset.

  25. locodave

    locodave Corporal

For some reason. It would not let me do a reset before. I tryed it a few times with an error. I could not do it. Chose the reset. Got error not able to do it. Words to that effect. My bios shows 2 settings. Top is EFI with everything listed below, H/D, C/D-DVD, USB. Just below is Legacy, same things listed under it.

Prior, everything was enabled in both.

After I disabled everything in EFI. Now it's going thru the motions ( With legacy? ) It's at 36%. Crossing my fingers.

  26. locodave

    locodave Corporal

77% so far. It's also getting rid of the user accounts. Once done, if it works. Up and running. I'll enable EFI again

I now have a reset, fresh install of Win 10. :) :) :) . Just the recycle bin on the desk top.

I left the USB with the ISO file in when I rebooted when I changed the disable boot in EFI. Don't know if that made a difference when on re-boot from bios changes. Then got the screen to get to advanced options. To get to reset. I did pull it out once I was in reset.

I want to thank all of you for helping me. I know posters thought I was not reading the reply. I always did read it. Didn't ignore. Comprehend most of it and when asked. I would re-read and re-read. Not trying to tick ppl off trying to help. Sometimes I go to brain default on what I see on the screen. Not think and go with my gut on past learning. ( Didn't even think about it when I saw repair, advanced options, see reset that didn't work before. ) Chose it and it ran. Clicko.

On the see the zip file. Covering my bets. I usually know what I'm looking at. But do I want to use it? And was it a prob with windows or a prob with the H/P config installed controllers.

Again, much thanks for all the help. 1st order of bizz. Make a restore, boot, backup disks. Then do updates and do it again. Tools for the future.

Then enable EFI and if it still works. Do it again.

The zip file you mention, I assume that is what you downloaded from MajorGeeks, should now be DELETED from the USB drive. It will be out of date very soon and you most definitely should not use it again.
Hopefully, if you ever need to do a RESET again it will work fine.
BUT if you ever need to do a reinstall of Windows (which is not a Reset!) you should do it in the very simple way we explained and nothing like how you posted above.

Trouble was. I did do as instructed. ISO file Win 10 on the USB. For some reason. Anyway I tryed it, got the error message of could not install because of the Windows cannot be installed to this drive. The selected drive has an MBR partition table. On EFI systems, windows can only be installed to GPT disks.

When I went to bios and disabled everything in EFI. It then worked for reset. Go figure?

Even tryed with the usb in. After changes, the USB with the ISO did not run. Just went to repair.

    Zip file is gone.

You didn't but there's no point in discussing that again for the 3rd or 4th time.
THERE IS NO ISO FILE TO BURN when using a USB drive. An ISO file is only for use with a DVD disk. You downloaded a file from MG we advised you not to.
A full reinstall is very simple. It was all the other incorrect steps you were taking that caused the long winded problem.

    K. I did have an ISO file burnt to a DVD. Bootable. Along with the same file on a USB. At least I'm up and running again.
