There was a time when my brain was active and worked, the same goes with my memory as I pass from 81 to 82 years can it only get worse.

For a long time I was able to play a cd from the cd player and run a cable from the player to the line in on my computer, now the cd plays but it does not go to my computer.
There is something that I need to do cut cannot figure it out. I have cable with two female plug cable that I plug into my speaker so that I could listen while the cd played but I cannot recall what I used for the other plug.

    All help appreciated

Which version of Windows are you using?
Open the sound settings and select Line In under Recording.

Could not find line in under recording. My sound system is RealTek and I do not like it.

I use Windows 7 and have VIA HD Audio.
However, the Windows audio settings will be similar.
What do you see when you right-click the audio icon (bottom right) and then click Recording Devices?
Here's a screenshot of my settings.

Let us know if you sorted it out.
I use a cable like the one in post #6 to play my PC through a Hi-Fi.
And I use a simple cable with 3.5 mm stereo jack plug at each end to play my Hi-Fi through the PC.

You could of course dispense with all cables and the CD player too by using Windows Media Player to 'rip' the music on your CDs. For each track this ripping process creates a compressed file, usually in mp3 or wma file format, which your computer's optical drive can read and play. Purists don't approve of this but the human ear cannot actually detect the difference between an original CD and it's mp3 derivative. Once the mp3s have been created they can be copied to phones or tablets and listened to with earphones wherever you are, or simply played through the computer.

    Correction
That should read 'which your computer can read and play'

tried that and after a while it start skipping etc. These are apparently unusual cds they are basically sound music created for church group singing. I am trying to help Pastor's wife. I believe that the only way I can copy the music is to play it it and run it through Auda city and convet it to wave which I have done many times in the past. However if I can find a way from Real Tek to allow me to get into my sound and add a line don't know why this vanished from my system.
Thanks to all who has given their thought's

To all those who assisted me on my journey with the sound problem, and to you
Eldon I found that the line in on my computer had been disabled along with other sound situations.
The only problem now is trying to get the sound played through Audacity and converted to wave.
This is a great board. Thanks

What sound (from where) are you trying to play through Audacity?

Right-click Line In and click Enable.
