Hi, I'm thinking of upgrading my mom's old XP PC to a newer Windows. It's pretty old, it has a Core 2 Duo E7300 CPU @ 2.66, GHz, 2 sticks of 2 GB RAM (forgot the specs, but it's old, same age with the CPU), and a 1 TB HDD.

The PC will be mainly used for browsing, streaming videos and some office work, in that order. Was thinking of upgrading it to at least Win 7. Win 8 is out as my dad's PC is Win 8 and my mom has tried it and absolutely hates it. (yes, they have their own PCs)

My question is should I install just the 32-bit of Win7 as the 4GB of RAM is really the bare minimum for 64-bit to ensure smooth operation? On a side note, would Win 10 be too much for the hardware?

    Is/was the XP x86 0r x64?

    Can the RAM be increased?

My x86 (originally XP) laptops both run Windows 8.1 x86 just fine but, Windows 10 x86 is doggedly slow.

My C2D (@ 2.67 GHz) laptop came with 4 GB of RAM and Vista Business x86. I increased the RAM to 8 GB and installed Win 8.1 Pro x64 (I also run Win 7 and 10 from separate partitions).

If your Mom's dislike of Windows 8 is because of the Start Menu (or rather the lack thereof), you can install Classic Shell which will give her a choice of Classic (XP) style menu or Windows 7 style menu. Windows 8.1 can also be set to go to the Desktop instead of the Start Screen on login.

Windows 8.1 is also the last version of Windows to allow you to choose whether to download and install Windows Updates. No such option in Windows 10 — you can delay updates but not refuse them.

Hi my friend , you could download this

informing us about your motherboard model in ( mainboard tab ) even take a shot in Cpu , Memory and Spd tab , Windows 7 is better solution but Windows 10 have the same system requirements , Windows 32 is using 3.25 gb of ram , Windows 64 need 4 gb of ram to works properly , Windows 8 and Windows 10 looks the same my friend though , like you said , is depending of the hardware supporting ( drivers etc ) about Windows 10 , but is very difficult for this old machine to support Windows 10

It's 32-bit XP. RAM can be increased, but they'd rather not as they want to retire it in a year or so and then get a new one.

Thanks for telling me about Classic Shell. I'll take a look into that. I guess I might go with Win 8.1 if I can get the UI to look like XP or Win 7. I'll make the changes to my dad's PC as well.

I guess Win 10 is too much to ask, thanks for the reply. I think I might install Win 8 and just change the UI into the more classic look.

New computers are shipping with Win 10 and are using UEFI instead of BIOS and their hard drives are initialized GPT instead of MBR — be aware of that.

Classic Shell and going to the Desktop instead of the Start Screen on login will make the UI much more familiar.

On a separate note, tell your parents to avoid Lenovo. They install spyware at the factory!
