    Greetings again,
My partner's laptop; HP Compaq 6910p has been running Windows 10 with 4GB RAM for about a year.
Originally picked it up refurnished with Windows 7 and upgraded it. Since then I have swapped the hard drive for a SSD.

Problem is that it doesn't want to update to the Windows 10 Creators update. It comes up with an error message saying that Windows 10 couldn't be installed and that 'you can't install Windows on a USB flash drive using Setup.'
I wasn't trying to install Windows on a USB flash drive... The laptop has been runnig Windows 10 for almost a year.

I am a little confused. I would like the laptop to be running the latest updates so that it can remain web friendly.

Any thoughts what I should do?

    Best wishes,
    s.

I found a youtube video that shows what happens. It doesn't offer a solution...

Are you running the version 1703 (Creator) Setup directly from within Windows 10 (in other words opening the ISO in Windows Explorer and double clicking Setup)?

When I did that on my two laptops which both have SSDs, it ran a check of 3 items, I got green checkmarks for all 3 and Setup proceeded with the usual 3 restarts. There were a couple of updates I installed afterward (security for Flash Player, Definition update).

Do you mean go to https://www.microsoft.com/en-ca/software-download/windows10 Clicking on
Create Windows 10 installation media Download tool now ? From there creating an ISO. Mounting the ISO within Windows 10. and clicking on Setup.exe?
This I have not tried. But perhaps I should. I was wondering about mounting the ISO within Windows. Whether the OS recognizes the virtual drive when it tries to restart?

    Thanks for the direction,
    s.

After the setup files are copied to your computer from the ISO, the Virtual DVD drive isn't used any more — the same as if you had booted to an installation DVD — you can pull the DVD after the initial restart.

Thank you Mdonah, When I follow the procedure I get the following choice win10setup.jpg

If I chose Create installation media for another PC I will download the ISO file?

Apologies for asking but I do want to be sure I know what I am doing.
I shall make a backup before I start.

Thank you for helping. I shall let you know how it goes but it might be a couple of days before I get the use of the laptop...

    Best wishes,
    s.

You can choose to create an ISO file or a bootable USB installation drive.

Yes, as Just Playin said, you'll be given the option of ISO or bootable flash drive. Choose ISO and save it to your Desktop then, proceed from there.

You can then create a bootable (8 GB) flash drive with the ISO, if you wish, using ISO to USB.

I now have the ISO file which I've copied to a flash drive. The plan is to take it to the offending laptop. Copy it to the data partition and mount it from there.
My partner is a little concerned. She asks what would happen if I don't do anything? Just leave it the way it is.
    Any thoughts?

    Many thanks again,
    s.

In a situation like this I would always take an image. That allows you to get back to the current situation if it become necessary.

Unfortunately it didn't work. Mounted the ISO image and ran setup.exe as Admin'. After checking compatibility up flashed a purple box - Windows 10 couldn't be installed and that 'you can't install Windows on a USB flash drive using Setup.'

Oh dear... Will the laptop receive other updates?

I had this situation, when I used a usb installation- it thought I was using it from a usb- I had to reinstall.

Thank you baklogic, As mentioned above Widows 10 has given the same response when I try to update from the net or from the mounted ISO. I want to ask how did you reinstall? From what medium? Were you asked for your installation key?

Perhaps I should put the old HDD back and try a new installation. Would I need to turn the iso into a bootable USB drive?

    Many thanks,
    s.

If you use the media creation tool- download to desktop, from https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows10
When you use that it will ensure a bootable installation media , -Microsofts words........
    https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/sof...s10?36261b60-2f68-4336-abe2-4b00f210b6aa=True
An internet connection (internet service provider fees may apply).
    • Sufficient available data storage for the download, on a computer, USB or external drive.
    • A blank USB flash drive with at least 5 GB of space or blank DVD (and DVD burner) if you want to create media. We recommend using a blank USB or blank DVD, because any content on it will be deleted.
Basically it is just that simple- That is what I did to reinstall properly, as I often test different options, and I even made a usb 3 disc with Windows 10 installed on it- Absolutely useless as it took over an hour to load up, when I tried it.
There are other ways, but try this first

Your installation key is kept on Microsoft servers for the pc/laptop you have it on, so it will not need a key when installing- just install and then when you go on-line it will activate automatically.
That second link seems to go to Viglink - just click continue to Microsoft

I have the ISO created from the first source. When I re installed the download file it cam up with

    todvd.jpg

If I right click on the ISO file and create a DVD I think it should boot up.
    s.

I'm using Imgburn to burn the DVD (disk image to disk)

If you are putting it on a usb, then that is the correct button- If you wish to put it on dvd, then tick the iso file
To create installation on usb - put the usb in the pc, start the Microsoft media tool, and direct it to the usb
From Microsoft - if you want to use a dvd....
If you downloaded an ISO file for Windows 10, the file is saved locally at the location you selected. If you have a third-party DVD burning program installed on your computer that you would prefer to use to create the installation DVD, you might be able to open that program by going to the location where the file is saved and double-clicking the ISO file. Or, you can right-click the ISO file, select Open with and choose your preferred DVD burning software.

If you want to use the Windows Disk Image Burner to create an installation DVD, go to the location where the ISO file is saved. Right-click the ISO file and select Properties. On the General tab, click Change and select Windows Explorer for the program you would like to use to open ISO files and select Apply. Then right-click the ISO file and select Burn disc image.

Thank you again, baklogic. Now I have another question.
If I use the DVD to freshly install Windows 10 on the old HDD. Will the current version of Windows 10 on the SSD drive work if I exchange the drives. I want to make sure my partner can use the laptop when she needs it. It might take a few days to get the new OS, on the HDD, to be ready for the SSD. Can I run 2 versions of the OS on the same laptop? Not, of course, at the same time.

    Thanks again,
    s.

Just followed your procedure to burn image via Windows explorer. Just in case Imgburn doesn't make the DVD bootable.

If you use the DVD to freshly install Windows 10 on the old HDD. the current version of Windows 10 on the SSD drive will still work, if you want to swap drives.
    I do this regularly.

What has me puzzled is why your SSD is being detected as a USB drive when it's an internal drive (isn't it?).

My two Dell laptops have Samsung 850 EVO SSDs and I had no issues installing version 1703 from the mounted ISO.

I'm very happy to hear this.

I was just about to start a new thread...
Using Windows 10 Pro on 2 Hard Drives

I'm having problems updating my partner's HP Compaq 6910p laptop.

My aim is to reinstall Win 10 pro 64bit on the original HDD.
During the time I'm setting this up I would like to replace the current SSD drive into the laptop. So that my parnter can keep using it.

    Is this possible?
I am haapy to disconnect and replace the drives but will the Windows 10 allow me to do this?

Apologies for creating a new thread but my question has changed.

    Many thanks,
    s.

Yes me to. It is confusing and the only thought I have is that the laptop was upgraded from Windows 7. Seeing if the OS will install afresh is useful knowledge.

I did have the same problem- I cannot remember how I managed it, but I think I tried another tool, and not Microsoft's media tool.
You know what we are like- try different things- anyway, my update problem with that was identical- it thought I was running it from a usb drive, and I was not.
Because I experiment a lot, I often get funny things happen .

I think that it's a while since I've run a driver update scan on the laptop. The motherboard was created before SSD's were common and only has manufacturer's downloads for Windows 7, vista and XP.
    Any recommendations for Driver scans?

This task will not be completed today.

This has made me very curious. The drive is a Intel SSDSC2BF240A4L which on further searching I came across the Intel® SSD Firmware Update Tool Version: v2.2.1 (Latest) Date: 5/24/2017

I have burnt the ISO file onto a bootable (I hope) CD. I shall reread the instructions but this could be the cause of all the problems.
Will find out tomorrow night once I have done another backup.

    Good night,

    Hello again...
Only a couple of hours before I get my hands on the offending laptop.
Do you think I should restore this morning's backup onto the OLD HDD and then see if it will update?

If this doesn't work I can fresh install Windows 10 but it would save time reinstalling all the needed programs.

Once again I'm trying to cut corners.
    Kind regards,
    s.

Fresh install seems to be working. Didn't like installing from DVD got a error code 0x8007025D. Found a 16GB flash card and using rufus turned the ISO into bootable USB thing. Seems to be working...

Sorted. The fresh install has taken on the old HDD and the storage partition was undisturbed.
I need a day away from the Microsoft tyranny.
Just pleased I didn't follow their advice and spend money that I don't have.

    Thanks for the help,
