After a crash I recently reinstalled Vista on my Dell E5500 laptop. It went smoothly, and everything is good except when I try and go online. Chrome and Firefox are really messed up. They worked fine before the crash. I've already eliminated the possibility of Malware, so now I'm here on the software forum. I don't remember everything I've tried to fix the problem, but have tried quite a lot of stuff. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Ed

    What does this mean?
Which versions of Chrome and Firefox are you using?

The browsers will load most of the time, but sometimes not. The search engines work ok most of the time, but sometimes not. The real problems are in loading web pages. Sometimes they load, but mostly not.....or very slow. Downloading files is difficult at best, and watching a youtube video is almost impossible.

I think I'm using the most recent 32 bit browsers, but maybe not. Firefox browser is 52.3.0 (32-bit) Chrome is Version 49.0.2623.112

Ok. Your browsers are the latest for Windows Vista.
Have you checked your modem's download/upload speeds?
Go here and post the results.

Vista..... I always ha problems with Vista, too.
I would advise you to download a very helpful set of work called Advanced System Care.
This program is the free version- It can check, and update drivers, and fix any registry errors that occur when we start updating and 'fixing',as Windows seems to get many errors, as we add programs, etc:
    From Majorgeeks
    http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/advanced_systemcare_10.html
This should eliminate a lot of problems- drivers are hard to find for older systems, and this program is very good at finding and installing.

@Eldon, The speed test results: Download 14.40 Mbps, Upload 6.89 Mbps

    @baklogic......will give it a try.

    Thanks

@baklogic, I downloaded the file but couldn't open it......very frustrating, it's part of the problem with this computer. Some files I can open and others not. Is there another way I can get the program.

Not knowing what you have tried, I will point to ...........
In search box, type command, and run as administrator
I suggest that you open a command prompt, and TYPE IN sfc /scannow and press - this might help to repair Windows , if there is a problem with Windows, itself.
When it shows as finished, type in EXIT.
    Chkdsk ..........
Click start, click explore, right click on the C: drive, and click properties, click on the tools tab in the little box, click box (check now),UAC will usually come up, click its little box to continue, next click to tick both -Click start in that box, then click buttons scheduled disc check, and restart.
It is some time since I used Vista, but I believe this is how it worked in Vista- it has not changed much as far as I can remember, in later versions of Windows-just slightly.

I got way too into the weeds, so decided to do a careful reinstall of Vista. So far everything is running smooth. The only thing left to do is install Firefox. Someone suggested ESR Firefox, but the links won't download it. Can't I just use the regular Firefox?

Thank you to everybody. Things are looking up. I was able to install Firefox 52.3.0 ESR. At the moment everything is working very well. Thanks again, Ed
