Working on a friend's Acer Aspire 5742Z and want to see if it will enjoy Windows 10.
    Current BIOS is version 1.60.
Can't find the newest BIOS on Acer site.
    Found. A 1.30 version?
    But created 2012/11/13

Do you think I should upgrade the BIOS before I attempt a Windows 10 installation? Or should I keep the 1994 BIOS?

Since Acer offers NO drivers for Windows 10, I assume it is not supported on that model.

As far as the BIOS update, if the computer is working fine, let it alone.

    How did you determine that?
Aside from avoiding BIOS updates unless absolutely necessary, I'd never install a BIOS that was not listed at the manufacturer's site for that model of computer.

    thank you plodr.
I went into the BIOS from a F2 command at boot up.

True but my desktop happily runs Windows 10 64bit even though it arrived with XP 32bit and had updates for Vista.
Windows 10 is quite good at making systems work...

That page says NOTE Acer will only provide upgrade support and Windows 10 drivers for models that appear on the Windows 10 eligible models list.

Then when you scroll down and put in Aspire 5742Z and click drivers, it leads to a page with only drivers for Windows 7.

Bottom line: that model is not supported for Windows 10.

Thank you plodr, I will point that out to my mate,
The laptop is currently installing windows 7 updates. 55 of them.
The laptop will work better for what I'm doing with its current HDD.
I do plan to update the BIOS and then check for driver updates.

When I'm happy with windows 7 running I shall replace disks and try for Windows 10.
Might be a complete waste of time.
    Kind regards,

Running Win 10 on an unsupported system is obviously a bit of a suck it and see affair. We have a 2006 Medion here, like your machine supplied with 32 bit XP and a Vista upgrade, but with its RAM upped to 4GB it runs 32 bit Win 10 faultlessly. However one of these days a new Win 10 version will have insurmountable issues I'm sure. We also have a couple of Lenovo Thinkpads which likewise are unsupported for Win 10 but so far have run it without issues, everything works. But I upgraded all these machine when Win 10 was free. I rather doubt I would have done so if I had had to pay £120 each time.

What you say is very true. I did read somewhere about entering a windows 7 code into the Windows serial number box.

I will certainly keep the windows 7 disk especially as it is now updated with the latest BIOS. Thank you IODiverbooster
    The experiment will continue...

Further to the thought that Windows 10 costs £120 I would like to present a video that was published yesterday. It has been put together by Britec; a youtube character that I have followed for a couple of years.
    Windows 10 Pro for $15

Firstly I wouldn't trust any site like that since you have no idea if the install will be blocked or activation will be blocked.
And that website (SCDKey) is NOT offering Windows 10 Pro for $15 but $31.90

I did pay £19 for Windows 10 pro almost 2 years ago and it has been activated ever since. It was something of a risk.

    Update.
Managed to get Windows enterprise running on 3GB RAM 2.0GHz

    Gone back to Windows 7.
    Replacing the drive for SSD.
    Top up the RAM.
    Sorted.

It does seem a bit dodgy but one can easily spend $30 on a couple's night out, so I suppose it's not a huge risk.

P.S.: I now have Office 2016 Pro and all the official MS bells and whistles, so it appears to be legitimate.

It didn't on the day I searched quite widely a week ago. I would not have missed that.
