just set up new Seagate 1TB hard drive with windows 7 ultimate 64 bit. Loaded HP OfficeJet 6500A all-in-one software connected by USB. Printer works but scanner reports no 2 way communications and won't scan. Ran HP updates . Still no luck. Tried their scanner repair software . Still no luck.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated

    Hi Plodr,

Thanks for that. Some consolation knowing I'm not the only one I guess !! LOL !! ,,, Just ran HP diagnostic tool on it again and let it go on for an hour or so. Finally came back with Non-HP cartridges installed. Said to install genuine cartridges and try again.

I am running an endless ink supply system with it. Wouldn't surprise me if HP put something in their updates to mess with the complete functioning of the printer if you don't want to buy their cartridges . Might have to try buying a set and see if that fixes problem and if so transfer the cartridge chips to the ink supply cartridges.

My suggestion would be the following:

    1. Do a thorough and total uninstall of the HP Software using a thorough uninstaller such as either of the Revo FREE uninstaller (choose only the FREE download link) or the IoBit FREE Uninstaller.

    2. You should then do the uninstall in this EXACT manner:

    a) Run the uninstaller of your choice and when it has completed the standard uninstall choose either the ADVANCED mode of scanning in Revo or the POWERSCAN in Iobit and delete every single file it finds.
when the above is fully completed:

    b) RESTART your system

    c) Now run a FREE disk cleaner of your choice either 'CCleaner Slim FREE' or 'Wise Disk Cleaner FREE' and in CCleaner run BOTH the 'Cleaner' and the 'Registry' scans - the last one enough times until it finds ZERO issues. In Wise just run the standard cleaner in its default settings.

    d) NOW RESTART your system

    3. Now download from HERE the full HP software suite for that printer and do a clean fresh install.

I personally do not believe for one second that the cartridges are to blame for only the scanner not working but I'm happy to be proved wrong. Either way it doesn't make sense or the standard printer wouldn't work either.

    Hi,

Thanks for that. I'm not sure about HP sabotaging the scanner function for having non HP cartridge. But what made me think it was possible was a friend who needed to scan something when her black ink cartridge was empty. Her HP wouldn't let her scan until she bought and installed new black cartridge. Theoretically printer shouldn't need any ink cartridge to use scanner function but hers wouldn't scan until she did.

Thanks again for your time and help !!

Oh and I forgot to add that after running the scan and print HP diagnostic software the error message I got was that printer couldn't establish TWO WAY COMMUNICATION with computer and gave solution as install genuine HP cartridges. So maybe you can print because that's only one way communication from computer to printer. Scanning requires printer to send info to computer.

    Anyway thanks again,
    Jim

    This is worth a try.
Check in Services if Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) has started.

    Hi Eldon,

I'll have to run the HP diagnostic tool again because I accidently closed that page earlier but I believe that's the part where it stopped and reported the error 2way communication error and said to install genuine HP cartridges. Think there is another image acquisition test after the WIA one that it never got to.

Is there another way to check "Services" without running the HP tool ? I'm semi literate in computer stuff but never did any " check in Services " Thanking that might be a place to go in computer to see what's running ?? If so , don't know where to find it.

    Thanks,
    Jim

Had to run out for a while. Not sure if this is what you wanted to see ?

    No.
Double-click one of the printer shortcuts on the Desktop.
I need to see the HP program for the printer.

That was the first screen you get when click on the printer icon on desktop.

Did you want me to go into programs directory and pull up something like this , ? Maybe look at the config file ?

Are you using WIA or twain? In NAPS profile settings switch it. Twain usually works...

Think I set it up as WAI . I'll try that

    Thanks

Followed step 1 Step 1: Go to Control Panel –> Device and Printers and double-click on the HP printer icon. You should find Scanner Actions there. Under that, click on Activate Scan to Computer.

But I don't get the page that it says I should which is upload_2017-10-1_20-8-27.png

I get the page I posted before which is below again. Don't know if I need to uninstall and install again. Done it about 4 times. Used the Uninstall in the start menu hp program and then went into control panel to uninstall the related programs . Then installed couple times from original CD. Couple times direct from HP site.

    Ok, don't uninstall.
What do you see when you click 'Customize Your Printer' in the screenshot above?

All I get is the small "select a printer "window as seen below which has drop down with only the printer and fax listed

Closed a couple screens and found this screen open behind others . Not sure when it came up. This what you were looking for ?

Tried setting NAPS profile to Twain. Started scan, says scanning starting and then absolutely nothing happens. Here's setup screen. Don't know if I should try other twain implementation settings ??

One thing I haven't tried yet is the couple step uninstall process recommended by Max Turner London above.

The simplest troubleshooting step in this situation - to see whether the software and driver install is the issue and rule that out- is always the same and the genuinely most authoritative manner to do that is in post #4.

    Hi Eldon,

Just got a chance to look at this again. Been a crazy day. I do have the scan properties option. screenshot below. Click on test scanner button and you'll see supposedly passed. Click on event and try to start scan. Starts and then stops after about 25% of progress bar and reports no communication.

Going to try to reboot of computer and printer and see what happens. Just too weird.

    Thanks,
    Jim

I think your best option will be to visit the HP Support Forum.
    https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Printers/ct-p/InkJet
    Feedback will be appreciated. :)

FYI I would ignore the message about non-HP ink cartridges because you can print.

Also, in future use the Snipping Tool for screenshots.
Start > All Programs > Accessories > Snipping Tool.

IDK, since you've been in all the settings, I'd unplug the USB & plug it back in - in case the port got messed with, then try scanning again.
