Seems as if I should know better than to help out, but it is my nature. Any way, it sounds to me as if this older gentleman had a pop up on his screen about a problem with his computer and called the number. He went through the usual steps with this SUPPOSEDLY Helper whom he allowed access to his system and then got a bit scared and hung up on him after not getting what he expected (go figure, UGH!). Now I get his PC and when i boot it I get the dreaded:

"This computer is configured to require a password in order to start up. Please enter the Startup Password below screen."

I did the normal searches on this, and find only stuff from a few years back. Is there a Newer solution to this problem, or is my friends dad just hosed at this time. I did try to boot from a bootable CD first, but it seems to me that they have now figured out a way to bypass that option.

Any help is appreciated, other than telling him he is hosed and to not bother asking for my help in the future???

I think I uploaded the picture correctly that i took of his PC.

    Thanks in advance.
    Tom

Can you start in safe mode with networking and do you still get the password prompt?

Yes, still the same issue. BTW, i do not have it connected to any network or internet connection. I would not want to compromise my home network at this time.

That's the whole point of that article how - with a installation disk for Win 7 - that PW can be overridden.
If the system has a COA Product Key on a sticker using a USB drive with Win 7 on it should work just fine to reinstall afresh.

If the computer will boot to USB. We don't know how the BIOS is set up.

It's the same with ANY windows system. If you have the full current download and a COA Product Key it will reinstall the OS overriding anything currently on it. USB is often easier (I doubt it doesn't have a USB socket!) But it will also work with a DVD.
I don't really see your point. The purpose of a clean reinstall is for when it is not possible to fix the current installation. This is simple basic stuff.

Ok all, Was able to use TimW's original post to get past the issue this afternoon when home from work. Had too many work issues today to get home early to try it out and the Indians were on last night (although I wish I would have been working on this system with the outcome:(), hence why i didn't respond until now. As for the issue of not being able to boot to a cd, looks as if in my haste, I truly DID NOT make a BOOTABLE Disk like I thought I had. So bad on me for that error.

Tim, it is a HP Pavilion p6 series running windows 7 home premium 64 bit. I worked on it once b4 and installed both CCleaner and Malwarebytes for him, but from what i heard from his son (my friend) he is a LOT IMPATIENT and hates to run it. My question for you guys is:

WHAT DO I TELL HIM AFTER THIS SECOND EPISODE OF HELPING HIM OUT???:mad:

Do as he is advised and if he doesn't don't ask for help any more. It's being cruel to be kind.

    Max,
While I would like to do that, I do understand that he did indeed have a stroke that resulted in some brain surgery. So in other words, I AM TOO SOFT, lol!!

Maybe his Son, or someone who helps him should install security software that updates itself automatically every day when the system starts. Most of that is free. Even Malwarebytes Premium is cheap.
As for not responding to pop ups to call someone, not much you can do to stop him doing that.
