    You completely misunderstand.
Microsoft STOPPED streaming updates to Win 7 & 8 users to update to Windows 10 a lot more than one year ago.
None of the updates you list are anything other than normal updates for multiple different processes on the system it is showing them on.
Why, for example, would you even consider blocking the Malicious Software Removal Tool or updates to Silverlight (unless you never, ever intend to use it)?
Or the FIVE critical security updates for Windows 8?
Thinking and reading a little bit more to start with is best.

While I only have Win 7, I always avoid the PREVIEW updates which come along usually in the third week of every month as I read that these can be considered as BETAs. These will appear again next month on PATCH (2nd) Tuesday Windows Updates as NON-BETA.

Yep. Remember that these PREVIEWS come along about the 3rd week of each month, so in future best to hide them. Don't be a beta tester!

I have never, ever seen a preview update being offered on any of my systems, probably because I haver never registered as an Insider. Don't know whether Insiders can de-register, but maybe that would be the answer.

  9. Jesse Newell

    Jesse Newell MajorGeek

Oh ****, wish I'd known about previews sooner! I don't know why I got offered them. I never registered as an Insider either.

    Jesse Newell MajorGeek

Oh ****, now I'm panicking. I tried uninstalling the first preview, KB4041685, and after a while a dialog came up saying, "An error has occurred. Not all updates were successfully uninstalled." What do I do now?

  11. Jesse Newell

    Jesse Newell MajorGeek

Just tried the Windows Update Standalone Installer, got the following error code: 0x800f081f

  12. Jesse Newell

    Jesse Newell MajorGeek

Panicked and tried a system restore back to last week. It didn't work. I got this message when the computer came back on.

    Capture.PNG

The only two restore points I have at the moment are the one from last week that I can't restore to, and the one that was automatically created today when I installed all the updates.

Let your system update without interference. Any updates which are suspect are usually rectified in the next release. I believe you do more damage to the system by uninstalling than anything else. I have Win 10 and I let it happily do it's thing and I have never had a problem with it, any problems I do have are usually of my own making.

  14. Jesse Newell

    Jesse Newell MajorGeek

Thanks but I wish I wasn't getting such mixed messages. You're saying all updates are safe, most everyone else is saying previews can be dangerous and telling me to uninstall them. It's too late now, anyway. As I've already said, I tried uninstalling one of the previews in two different ways and got error messages both times. And now I can't perform a system restore.

I'm really panicking here. I don't know what's going wrong. I tried IObit Uninstaller. I asked it to uninstall KB4041685 and remove any residual traces. It said uninstall completed. So for a second I thought great, it's finally gone. But then I checked Everything. It still found 4,741 objects with KB4041685 in their names. I tried Programs and Features in the Windows control panel, View installed updates. It was still there. Even IObit's list of Windows updates, after refreshing, still included it. It's as if I did absolutely nothing. How can IObit say it successfully uninstalled this update if Everything, the Windows control panel, and even IObit itself are all telling me it's still there?!

Jesse what Windows version do you have? (just checking as I cannot remember off top of head)
    If your worried about ones stating Windows 8, 8.1, 10 and Windows Server 2012, 2012 R2, 2016 x64 Edition

DON'T as they cover all OS and not specific to W10 as KB4041685 e.g is more for Internet Explorer which is a cross OS application, covers the USB driver which again is cross OS, not specific to W10 only.

One of the reasons with Windows or any OS I run a good backup app. my current and has been since 2006 is Acronis True Image but you can get free options to do same job, as if something goes pear-shaped I can recover easily.

I have 8.1 Should I just stop worrying about KB4041685 then? Just leave it be? I've tried uninstalling it five times now. Twice from Programs and Features, once with the Windows Update Standalone Installer, and now twice with IObit. I got error messages and an error code the first three times but IObit told me twice it's successfully uninstalled and yet each time it turned out to still be there. I'm worried that I may have caused some damage trying and failing to uninstall it so many times.

I'm also worried because I can't find any trace of the second preview, KB4042078, even though I'd selected it for installation before I was told previews can be dangerous. Everything can't find it, it's not listed in Programs and Features, and IObit can't find it either. If it installed yesterday, why can't I find it today so I can uninstall it?

I've forgotten how to get into safe mode. Do I just restart and then hit F8 or something?

So can't you just restore a recent image? This situation is one of the main reasons you use it.

When a re-image is affected it can affect the whole smash of windows. Thus having at least a secondary backup drive connected to computer in a portable drive.

Might be a good idea be for any of that.Run virus / malware scans with SUPERAntiSpyware included in scans. You might hav some thing on system that could be stopping the process.

I don't have one. I made one a while back but I've made so many software changes since then that I deleted it and was gonna make another one in a couple of days. Now it's too late. No one told me in time that previews can be dangerous. This thread was up for hours and hours before anyone said anything like that. The first person who replied said there was nothing to worry about so I just went ahead and installed everything. Only to find out when it was already too late that previews can be dangerous. But I'm getting so many mixed messages in this thread. Some people say don't worry and others are saying worry. I don't know what to do.

What do you mean when a re-image is affected? Who said anything about a backup image being affected? I don't understand. And what's a smash? That's the second time I've seen you use the word smash. What does that mean? And I don't understand your second sentence either, sorry. It doesn't seem to be grammatically correct. Is English not your native language? And "Might be a good idea be for any of that." I'm sorry, I'm having a really difficult time trying to figure out what you're saying.

lol it means if a re-image is affected by a current virus or malware it would be point less to use it.Be cause all you would be doing most likely is reinstalling the virus or malware that is affecting the re-image.

  31. Jesse Newell

    Jesse Newell MajorGeek

Sorry, I don't understand why you're giving me that link. What has that got to do with the problem I'm having? The problem I'm having has nothing to do with the specific update spoken of in that article. I'm not trying to install any update any update and being unable to. I'm trying to UNinstall one.

But I don't understand why you brought up a re-image being affected. No one said anything before about a re-image being affected by anything so I can't understand why you did.

The error message in #12 told you your C drive may be corrupt and what to do about it. If you did not run chkdsk /R at the time then at least do it now. The symptoms you are reporting are consistent with a corrupt drive and there is absolutely no point attempting other fixes until that has been fixed, if a fix is still possible. If you did in fact run chkdsk then just ignore this.

As for Macrium, there isn't any point using it if you don't keep your images reasonably current. I image monthly, just before updates are due.

  35. Jesse Newell

    Jesse Newell MajorGeek

Sorry, I can't understand how. I had a look through the article but it's all about trying to install a particular update from a few years ago. I have no idea how to reverse any of those instructions in order to try to uninstall an update from yesterday.

  36. Anon-469e6fb48c

    Anon-469e6fb48c Anonymized

I was thinking there was some type of corruption in some why either a re-image or check disk or sfc or update in some way.

  37. Jesse Newell

    Jesse Newell MajorGeek

I didn't run chkdsk yet because no one had told me to. I know the error message said I could try running System Restore again after running chkdsk but no one here told me it was absolutely necessary to run chkdsk. I'd assumed there might be another reason for that error message that someone might explain. But I'll try running chkdsk now.

  38. Jesse Newell

    Jesse Newell MajorGeek

Ah, OK. I'll try running chkdsk now.

  39. Jesse Newell

    Jesse Newell MajorGeek

A bit of good news at last. I told chkdsk to scan and repair, it got to 100% completion and the computer restarted normally with no error messages or warnings. So I assume everything's OK now. What should I try next? Uninstalling the update again with IObit, or trying a system restore back to last week again?

Why not try the restore point created right before the updates were downloaded?

  41. Jesse Newell

    Jesse Newell MajorGeek

OOOOHHHH, that point was created BEFORE the updates were downloaded? I'd assumed it was created just AFTER.

  42. Earthling

    Earthling Interplanetary Geek

Why do anything more if it's now behaving itself? I wouldn't, but I would be watching for future preview updates and I would image more often.

  43. Jesse Newell

    Jesse Newell MajorGeek

Too late. I just finished doing a system restore back to yesterday, just before I downloaded the updates. I reinstalled IObit, and the good news is neither it nor Programs and Features can find KB4041685 The bad news is Everything can still find 1,135 traces of it. This is a big step down from the 4,741 it found before the system restore, but I was still expecting it to find nothing. How come the system restore didn't remove all traces?

  44. Earthling

    Earthling Interplanetary Geek

System restore does not restore everything to the previous state, only restoring an image does that. If you really want to remove all the remaining traces then image the system as it is, just in case, and then use Everything and regedit to remove everything they find in both filenames and the registry, though it's hardly worth the effort - all systems contain a lot of disassociated junk which is harmless.

  45. baklogic

I have been watching this thread, and I do think Jesse Newell, is being a little paranoid about Windows update.
If the machine is running well, forget those other traces - Windows Update may occasionally need an update to update a faulty/problem update (Sounds a bit daft, but it happens- BUT RARELY).
If the updates did not cause a problem when installed, then I would just forget about them,-- my view is that any operating system, before Windows 10 should be pretty safe with Windows Update.
I signed up as an insider, and allow every update BUT, as a bit of a meddler, I tend to keep a second hard drive with MY SYSTEM COPIED TO IT, and if I get a problem, I can just change hard drives.
I f you are concerned about dodgy updates,, then follow Nick
    https://forums.majorgeeks.com/threads/microsoft-security-bulletin-s-for-october-2017.317325/
I would never advise anyone to uninstall an update, unless it causes a problem- not because it might be a BETA version -If no problem with it- LEAVE IT BE!
If you are not happy with REGEDIT, I would advise leave it alone.
If deleting folders in the registry, then you need to be very careful.
Iobit Uninstaller usually gives you the option to delete files left over as a secondary click, after main uninstall- so , if it did not, or, you missed it- I would not be concerned.

    Jesse Newell MajorGeek

Thanks. I don't think I'll bother. I did a search in the registry anyway for KB4041685, couldn't find anything. I assume that's what I should have entered in the search. I just hit Ctrl+F and searched for KB4041685 and found nothing.

I'm still a bit worried though about the updates Coyote mentioned in this post,

Why did he bring those two up?

  47. Jesse Newell

But, ya see, this just proves the point I was making earlier about mixed messages. About half of you are telling me to relax and chill, and the other half are like,

I know nothing about any of this stuff so I'm relying on what you guys are telling me. But you guys can't settle on what to tell me. One person says, "I install everything", then someone else says,

Who am I supposed to believe?!

Lesson learned. I will avoid previews from now on. But I'm still concerned about why Coyote brought these two updates up,

They're both among the 17 "important" updates I was just about to reinstall. Now I don't know whether to avoid them as well.
