Forcing App To Install On D:drive To Save Ssd Space

Hi all - I have a small SSD and large HDD. I have a game that defaults to the C: drive for installation (Everquest 2). When installing the Beta version of new game, it defaults to same location. My problem is my SSD is almost full, and I would like to force the Beta install to my vast HDD. Any ideas would be very much appreciated.

During the install process, when it shows which drive it's going to install to, change it to your HDD drive letter (there should be a "drop-down" menu).

Thanks, there's not. It DEFAULTs to wherever the original app installed which is C:. I'm looking for a way to force it to go to D.

Then why don't you just do a full and properly clean UNINSTALL of that game, then download a new set up file and install it on the drive you want. It should be that simple.
What is the actual size of the SSD by the way? 'Small' doesn't actually mean anything.

Sorry. It's 128. And I'm sorry I'm not being clear... I don't want to uninstall the actual game on SSD. I want to keep that on SSD, but install BETA of new version on HDD. It wants to simply install BETA in new folder on SDD, and I would like to force it to put on D:. Or Alternatively, I'd like to put it on D: and make it think it's on C:

Then what you posted earlier indicates you don't have a choice. I don't even see the logic of what you want.
Your SSD is by no means small. Your system files shouldn't be greater 60-70gb so I don't see your problem.

A better solution may be first to move your personal folders, Docs, Music etc, to your HDD, depending of course on how much data they contain. The Properties of each of your personal folders has a Location tab which can be used to move them and their contents to another drive. There are other advantages to this, apart from freeing space on the system drive.

I'm sorry you don't see the issue or my logic, and I guess I'm just not geek enough to explain it properly. Contrary to what you think I should have on my SSD, my 128 has 98 GB full, because It has system files and 1 Game. I'd like to keep that setup. I thought there was a way to 'trick' windows into thinking the data/program files for an app were on C: by aliasing (not sure if that's the right word) to something on D. That's what I'm looking for. Earthling - thank you for that tip, I will definitely do that either way to keep SSD from getting any more full.

You have already said that the Beta update gave you NO choice of where to install it. That's the logic you don't seem to want to accept. 98 out of 128 is NOT full. It is well within the bounds of reasonable free space.
    Good luck

Another tip is to install Treesize Free, a program that helps you understand and improve your space utilisation.

Ok, Thanks Earthling. Wow, this site used to be a place where you could ask questions and try to learn something without being made to feel like an idiot. I'll try elsewhere.

There is an Ignore option here, you could use that.

Yes, when someone doesn't like accurate advice they should just move on.

Thanks Earthing! I did just that after being dressed down in a PM for not being properly grateful. Just FYI, there is a utility which may do what I was trying to explain. Again, I apologize that I couldn't articulate it well - this allows you to 'trick' windows by creating junctions or links that mask different locations. I'm hoping that'll do the trick! Have a great day. file:///C:/Program%20Files/LinkShellExtension/Doc/linkshellextension.html#introduction

You were asked to re-examine the details and facts and chill out. You have made one previous actual issue and you never responded to the help others offered.

you could install it and then move the folder over to D: and see if it will run from there. But will the beta install over the one you want to keep?
you could also try extracting the program instead of installing with universal extractor or other tools.

Thanks foogoo, Will give that a try before getting too deep into the link Extension. It appears that the BETA installs in a separate Betaserver directory under the original app - with all it's own content. Doing a Smartmove or something may just do it. Appreciate the suggestion.

I use the link shell extension myself to fool the system into thinking variously located folders are in OneDrive. Don't see how it could be used in your situation though.

Even if not 1mb of data can be moved from C to D, as long as the Beta game takes no more than about 10gb of data - on top of the existing install - there is no logical reason to install it anywhere other than C.

If the field where the installer says it's going to install to is editable, you should be able to change the "C" to "D" leaving the rest of the line intact. It may need to create the new directory (if it will do so) OR you may need to manually create the new directory yourself (ie. D:\Program Files (or Program Files (x86))\Program Name\) first.

Many people do this for space saving (like you) or they have other reasons for doing so.

You made the same suggestion at the beginning and the OP told you that choice doesn't show. The reasons for that are obvious as the OP is talking about an update to an existing installation.
