Please excuse the long post and screen shots [SS] but obviously no one can't help me without knowing all the facts & details.

I CAN share files from the Mac to the win9 pc. the first time - the pc asked for a pw and I used my login pw - now it doesn't require a pw to access & xfer my files.

on the Mac: I go to finder and in the left pane scroll down to" shared" and see Optiplex 980 and click on it (ss1)

which brings up the next screen (ss2). just below the tool bar and to the left it says "not connected" and to the far right it says "connect as". whenever I click on connect as it bring up the next screen (SS3). my name (rogercarpenter) is there whenever the screen comes up - I did not enter it. I have tried EVERY pw that I can think of but nothing works. the login pw doesn't work either. don't know if it could be an issue but I use the same login pw on here as I do on the win7 pc. it says (ss3): Enter your name and pw for the server optiplex 980. I don't have a clue as to what that means.

I am including some more screen shots showing various settings and config for the Mac.

    any help - greatly app

If this Mac/Windows file sharing is something you need to have available all the time then you will need to solve the networking problem. But if this is a one-off exercise you could avoid all the associated problems by using an intermediate storage device such as a HDD, a USB pen drive or an SD card.

There is no such thing as Windows 9 btw.

win 7 - sorry about the typo - I really do need to get this networking prob resolved but so far (last2 wks) I haven't had any any luck. what I've been doing is using a flash stick to xfer with but this is getting a little inconvenient - I'm having to share files more than I thought I would. tks 4 reply

my only thought here... on the mac, you might need to check the windows "workgroup" name and make sure that it is the same workgroup name as your windows computer. this would be in the network settings of system preferences.
if all computers on your home network don't have the same windows workgroup name, then connecting to them can be problematic.
    good luck with it.

Strangely enough, I have just been asked to get some photos an files from a mac, and thought I might find something on majorgeeks- I found old links, but new search brought it up - Other than a linux bootable cd (Ubuntu, or such ) This does seem worth a free sample test, and possibly a purchase @£19.99,if it proves successful- So, I am interested, if anyone can add to this post, as I understand it might need to run in compatibility mode.
Anyone here tried it, or, a Linux disc ?

In baklogic's case, a Linux distro (i.e. Puppy & Simplicity) can mount and recover the Mac HFS/HFS+ formatted media... only cost is a flashstix.

absolutely brilliant software. you install it, then you forget that it is there until you need a new computer, and you have to work with external hard drives again.

i have their mac products -> NTFS and ExtFS on a couple of macs and i think they are amazing. they do what it says on the tin, and have never caused me problems. i feel they are well worth the price of admission.

    good luck with it.

Thanks-will try that on my other hard drive, where I keep w7/8.1/ and w10 (I have only created an almost complete W10 virtual machine on this hard drive, but have not managed to get the wifi connection working- I will eventually)
That way I can probably use the free version (not free for w10...unfortunately- I was going to try the free version in W10 just for access, but a free full version in w8.1 will obviously be better.
