Setting Up For Good Performance With A Remote Desktop Setup

I would like to use my far weaker laptop to access my more powerful desktop & work on the more powerful desktop but actually be sitting at the laptop. This allows me more flexibility, such as being out on my porch, etc. I like storing my files on my desktop computer because that way things are all in one place.

So, I am trying to determine how to set this up so that programs will run reasonably fast.

On my desktop computer, I have windows 10 running. Other than that, I am pretty flexible. I can install windows or a Linux distro on my laptop. Basically, whatever is needed to make it fastest. But, I think I would prefer to have Windows on the laptop.

Maybe I can use a display emulator?

I also understand that there a lot of remote desktop programs. For example, there is VNC Connect https://www.realvnc.com/en/connect/docs/faq/philosophy.html

But, I am not sure what setup will perform better than others.

I have exactly your situation - powerful Win 10 PC, modest laptop, all my files kept on the PC and can work on my files from either machine. TeamViewer has provided the perfect solution, configured on the PC to allow incoming LAN connections (exclusively in my case). You do need to use a fixed local address for the PC so you can connect to it from the laptop with a couple of clicks.

Is your laptop windows? if so, I believe there is a built in remote desktop program in windows, have you tried that?

I would use VNC or Windows RDP. Using TeamViewer is going a bit far for a local connection. IDK if TeamViewer creates a direct connection after the initial connection or not, but VNC or RDP you don't have to leave your LAN at all.
tightVNC will let you use a browser to connect - no client software needed.

Think there is also an updated improvement from Microsoft for XP Remote Desktop to a more secure version:

Just make sure all your computers are connected to a common home network (the same one). Then look in the Network Places folder (think that's it) and find the folder for the computer to connect to. Think you only have to right click and select remote desktop. Then you'll need the machine name of the PC being connected to and the password to the machine...

Ok. I will probably try the windows remote desktop, then.

That's what the "Accept LAN connections Exclusively" setting is all about. It's all within the LAN.
No. Been using TeamViewer without issue for so long I've never had reason.

Turns out you can't enable remote desktop on a Windows 10 home computer. Has to be windows pro.

VNC seemed to only allow cloud connections unless you pay a hefty price. So, I am on Teamviewer as I type this :) Thanks, everyone.

As a Teamviewer user it's natural that anything I come across, like this, that suggests it could be accessed and misused tends to raise my blood pressure. As I said earlier I have set it for LAN connections only, see pic, and have never opened a Teamviewer account so my TV installation ought to be invisible on the internet. Or am I deluding myself? (OP should be interested in this too now he is using TV).

Nice work there Earth......Im a huge teamviewer fan as well and use it regularly, its only that in my line of work, i sometimes need to expose it to the WAN.
It raises my bloods as well but i love geeking with it, and as you know, im a security freak.....I went to rehab to try and break my addiction, but it didnt help! :D
You should be as snug as a bug in a rug with those settings, good stuff! ;)

Yes, the OP should check this.....the TV will be the network hole for sure, the printer is mine!

Your post caused me to find out what Take a Test actually is, so here it is -

Can't see me having any use for it so might as well turn off those permissions too. Thanks!
