I recently updated both Mozilla Firefox to 56.0.2 (the last pre-Quantum version) and DuckDuckGo to 1.1.26. Now when I click on a search result it opens in the same window. I've look at the settings and it seems the option to open a search result in a new window has been removed.
    Or am I missing something?

    Thanks.
I've disabled DuckDuckGo and I'll just use StartPage.

You do not need an addon or any special installation to use duckduckgo with whatever configuration you want.
I use DDG all the time as my default search engine.
You can set DDG as the default in Firefox by going to Tools -> Options -> Search and selecting from the drop down list.
You can also select which search engine to use directly from the Search bar dropdown.

There is a better way to use DDG!
Open a duckduckgo.com tab and click the menu icon at the upper right corner, then select Other Settings
From there you can set many options, including Opens results in new windows/tabs.
I even created my own color scheme using only the built in options.

    1)
Once you have made All of your settings changes, click Show Bookmarklet URL
You can use that link to create a "fast dial" link that includes and uses your personal settings.

    2)
You can use Cloud Save to save all of your settings for use with ANY browser anywhere.
Just assign a password and you can instantly reload your settings.
If you want those settings saved between browser sessions, and you use Custom History settings,
be sure to add an exception for https://duckduckgo.com so the DDG cookie will not be deleted.

This works in Internet Explorer but not in Firefox 56.

I works for me if the Firefox option Open new windows in a new tab instead is Not selected.

I unselected Open new windows in a new tab instead, restarted Firefox, and it's still not working.

Two things, that I can think of, could prevent that from working:
    1) one or more installed extensions are preventing the new window opening
    2) the setting you turned off is being reset by a user.js file in your Firefox profile when you (re)start the browser

Restart the browser in Safe Mode.
Check the Open new windows in a new tab instead setting.
Also check the duckduckgo setting and then try a duckduckgo link again.
If it opens in a new window, then the problem is with one or more extensions.

If it still does not open in a new window, Right click on a link and choose Open Link in New Window
If that does not work, then something else is preventing the new window.
