Unwanted Phone Calls On Land Lines

So, 3 or so years ago, I posted this thread about my call blocker, which I still have and is still working great (if you're interested: https://forums.majorgeeks.com/threads/unwanted-phone-call-blocker.283444/#post-1874059)

In more recent news, as everyone knows, it is incredibly easy to spoof a phone number and make spam/scam calls to people on their landlines. And yes, some of us actually do still have landlines. :p I actually like having it because it's what I give to retailers and any other company I need to provide a phone number to.

I just got a surprisingly pleasant email from Verizon, who is our provider, about 2 day ago:
For anyone who wants the link to their info, this is it: https://www.verizon.com/support/residential/consumer-education/robocalls.htm

I am so excited they have finally taken action and one of the most notable things I learned was about this company, which I joined and enabled on my phone called Nomorobo. Sadly, you have to have a digital line, but it supports a lot of phone companies and it's free for landlines. You can set it up on your cell phone as well if you get a lot of calls on there. You have to pay for the app though.

We have a land line....but they keep calling. So we just use an answering machine and most just disconnect when it answers.

That didn't bother me too much a few years back when there wasn't much spoofing and the national Do Not Call list worked, but it just got to be way too much listening to the phone ring constantly with bogus calls.

To me it's like spam email. People say ignore it, but it annoys me too much so I'd rather find ways to block junk like that...including the ringing phone.

The good thing about Verizon and hopefully other carriers, are that they are now stopping the robocalls before they come through, which is great. I've definitely noticed a decrease in my phone ringing.

With my carrier, you have to manually list each incoming robo-call. PITA.

We haven't noticed a decrease in annoying calls. Perhaps the ones where really idiots talk don't count.

In fact a few minutes ago, my husband picked up and because we are "loyal customers" (of whom?, that's never mentioned) we won a free cruise. He didn't say a word and the gal on the other end just kept on talking. He hangs on just to keep her tied up so she can't bother others for a few minutes.

Me, I either don't answer or hang up as soon as I know it is an unwanted call.

I like what Jolly Roger did to combat these auto-diallers. He developed an answering system using algorithm clips, that sends the calls to a recorded message designed to waste the time of the telemarketer!
Now he has a virtual army of robots that anyone can utilize to protect cell, voip etc......Pick your own robot, for a fee ofcourse!

I know they can be a PITA Laura, get them here although since using http://home.bt.com/tech-gadgets/tec...rvice-crackdown-nuisance-calls-11364136279348 similar to your Verizon one but for BT users in UK, we;ve seen a 90% drop in these calls.

Wether the option to add a number while useful the same spam callers use various numbers but at least its stopping some more. I get one in work all the time that calls asking for "Angela Walsh" can be for electricity, gas, mobile phones, broadband etc, one for electricity I told them yeah lets see what you can do, you could hear the beaming smile until I told him he'd have to supply a UK Gov dept and we trace all calls, **click** hung up, damn inconsiderate.

From what I saw, I do believe it's just robocalls.
haha...that's brilliant. It totally sounds legit.

Good to see that the phone companies are taking this seriously. I'd imagine they have lost a good number of phone lines to the cell industry.

lol...well, I don't believe I have an answer for you. It would certainly take care of the crap robocalls if you got rid of it.

Yep, they use auto-diallers that just call numbers randomly and constantly from a predefined list, most likely supplied by your provider, which they will deny ofcourse..... if they get a human response such as 'hello', it auto transfers the call to a live telemarketer. If they get anything else such as silence, communication beeps etc, it just drops the line so as not to waste the time of the staff they employ to give the sales pitch.

We get robocalls where the tape plays into our answering machine - it plays whether someone picks up or not. It doesn't even wait until "at the sound of the beep please leave your message" to start.

I always answer my phone exactly the same way so of course my answering machine cuts in after only two rings and my recorded message is exactly the same as if I was really talking and answering.........even my friends get fooled as there is no warning beep so they keep talking until they realise it's my stupid bloody machine again........ hehehe.........and the good part is it wastes the telemarketer's time too as they reroute my answering machine to a real person to try and sell me something and I often hear them asking is anybody there lolol

We did away with the landline about a year ago and I honestly have not missed it. Since I have to give out my cell number for doctors, insurance, and such I have been receiving more spam on my cell phone. If I don't recognize the number showing on the caller ID I don't answer. I figure if it is important they can leave a voice mail.

I have never had a land line due to this mess. There nothing but scam artist and robot calls. Most people now a days have cell phones. You still get these type of calls. But not as often as a landline.DNC does not work,If any thing it makes it worse.

And if you do have a landline make em listen to a very loud song. For an hour or more lol.

landlines are good because if power goes out they work and with a charged laptop and free net zero a little internet==its probably a good thing to support the landline companies

ive had a straight talk home thing that works with landline phones on and off for 4 years

the old and very young can depend on a true landline with no worry of charging and turn on damn phone

Most cell phones last over 22 hours if it's not used. And if you have a portable battery pack they last a lot longer. Two maybe three days.I have a portable battery pack for my cell phone for when i go on a trip.
