Removing Subtitles From Videos

Anyone know of a free program that will allow you to remove embedded subtitles from videos. I tried using a function I found in, I believe it was VirtualDub, that was supposed to do that but it was about 80% effective, took hours, and it generated a new video file that was at least 10 times larger than the original. No so good a solution.
Failing actual removal, another approach I'm considering is finding a program that allows you to "edit" the video that has a function that will move the bottom border up and cover the subtitle line(s). That would reduce the visible screen by some amount but you would no longer see the annoying foreign subtitles. Greek is particularly bothersome :).

Any suggestions, leads would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Two problems.
This software is not free. That in itself is not a showstopper.
I D/L the software from Video Grabber and got an "evaluation version" I could not find anyway to load a file I already have on my system to see if I could eliminate the subtitles. It inferred that the file must be "grabbed" by the software before I could do any of the other functions.
In the process of wandering around looking for a program that would allow me to load and work on an existing video, I found a free program called PRISM which will let me change the borders. I'm testing that now.

Handbrake will do it, free program , not fast but does the job.

    Thanks for all your suggestions.
    1. Never could get the program suggested by TimW to work (APowersoft Video Download Capture). Couldn't even load a video.
    2. With beezneez suggestion of Handbrake, I could never find a specific function called "remove subtitles" but I did find a function that allowed the individual borders to be increased so I "moved" the bottom border up to cover the subtitle area.

Result - subtitles gone! (picture frame smaller)

Not a perfect solution but those distracting Greek words are done!

    Thanks

Yes, I have VLC, but I only use it to verify edits to video files. I don't watch videos on my PC. I burn them to DVD+Rs and watch them on my flat panel TV.
So I need a video editor that will remove subtitles from a video file prior to burning them to a DVD+R.

Sorry I wasn't more clear on my requirements.

So edit out the subtitles with VLC before you burn it.

If you are burning from an actual dvd you should be able to remove the subtitles easily using HB of VLC or whatever but if you are burning from a torrented download it is not so easy. I don't personally use torrents but someone gave me a downloaded file and I never could get rid of the subtitles.

I'm starting to become very confused. I don't know how to "edit" nor how to "save" a video file using VLC. As I said I use VLC to "verify" edits to a video file. I generally use Freemake to do the edits, but I have other video file editing programs.
I don't download ANYTHING from torrent.
I'm going to do some experimenting to see if I can find a way (or program) that will remove the subtitles.
I'll let you all know if I have any success. :)

Yes. I try to do everything Major Geeks tells me. I followed the directions exactly, found the subtitle preference, removed the checks as instructed and it didn't remove the subtitles. I suspect the subtitles are embedded in the video file. I know there is no separate subtitle file, as I checked that when I first began this quest since I know how to remove a subtitle file from a video file.
In any case I feel bad about wasting every ones time and effort on this.
I've been working on this "problem" for many months. The closest I came was using a function in Virtual Dub. It completely erased some of the subtitles in some of the frames, partially in other frames and not at all in some of the frames. That result was more distracting than just leaving them in.
I'm satisfied with the moving up of the bottom border for now.
One thing I have discovered is that many of the video creating, editing, etc. programs are real big on adding subtitles, which is actually not very difficult (using the subtitle separate file approach). But, once they become part of the video file itself, it's hell getting rid of them.
Thanks for all your help. Win some, lose some.

true about some subtitles being embedded. I have a lot of old BBC DVDs and quite a lot of them won't let me remove the subtitles when I burn a backup copy. I can turn them off when watching the original but not the copy. I actually use the bought version of DVDFab to rip all my movies and find it excellent but still wont fix the above problem.

    All is not lost...

To understand why some subtitles cannot be removed or even turned of, here are the types of subtitles in a nutshell.
    More info here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subtitle_(captioning)#Types

The above explains why free programs will work for one video, but not the next.

If you have many videos with subtitles it might be worth your while considering purchasing a program.
