The big external sliding glass door on my family room spat out one of the rollers and broke the mounting bracket away so I couldn't put it back and the door had to be lifted to close or lock. I called a sliding door repair specialist and Danny came out and said he could fix it no problem. I think he must have wanted to be a gynaecologist because of the way he went about installing a new set of rollers.
Previously when this problem occurred 10 years ago the repairman lifted the door out of its tracks and turned it on its side and removed the damaged plastic rollers and brackets then replaced the plastic rollers with solid brass rollers and metal brackets with stronger metal brackets then lifted the door back onto its track and adjusted it and this process took about 2 hours.
Not Danny though, he lay down on the floor next to the door and poked a small camera up the track to check the damage under the door. Then he went to his truck a grabbed a couple of small wedges and some more long thin tools and the new brass rollers and metal brackets. I asked did he want me to help him lift the glass door off the track because it is heavy for one person. He said no need because he had invented a special tool that he can use to slide the rollers under the door using the track to guide them and then using the camera he can ensure they are correctly installed in the right position. All this technology for a glass sliding door. The guy 10 years ago took 2 hours and charged AU$99 and Danny took 20 minutes and charged AU$150.
When Danny finished and I was paying him I told him that he reminded mo of the joke about the gynaecologist that rebuilt his car engine via the exhaust pipe and he just laughed. He said something that I thought was quite true, "These days you don't have to work harder to get ahead but you do have to work smarter."

As an Old, Old, now-retired Gynecologist, I can say that I "fixed the vehicle" many times via the "exhaust". I found it challenging and much more fun than approaching via the old school abdominal approach. My patients appreciated the faster, less painful healing period, and the quicker return to work (and working order). There REALLY ARE many more than one way to skin the cat (pardon the pun). Tee Hee.

Hehehe yep when Danny (the repairer) got out his camera and special tools I thought he was making it so much more difficult than it needed to be ...........but then I was totally amazed when he had finished the job in quarter the time, without any heavy lifting and he didn't make any mess.....he also offers a 10 year warranty on the repair ;)
And as you say their are MANY ways to skin the proverbial cat ;)

Quite so! I have been told many times that I should have written a book about my adventures in the female sphere of things. There have been innumerable incidents of hilarity and embarrassment. But I couldn't have done it anonymously, which is the only way I would have survived it all. So I never did. But I occasionally regale my golf foursome with a yarn or two. It helps me beat them, what with their fits of laughter and vomiting ------ how could I lose? I just get them laughing and take them to the cleaners.
