AS a result of a HARD DISK crash - I installed a new one - & reinstalled Windows 7 & all programs etc. Everything is fine except I am having issues setting up this Program - to back up files - to USB Drive - whether from a prior version or a current version of this Program- as it is requesting information that I cannot understand - & have no recollection how this was set up years back.........
The Simple Set Up Pages are fine until I get to the section in a Back Up - headed: SCHEDULER:

    It requests

    USER AUTHENTICATION SETTINGS

RUN THE TASK AS THIS USER

DOMAIN: (no idea what this is)

USER NAME: (no idea what to insert - do I just create one?

PASSWORD: (no idea what to insert - do I just create one?)

I do not appear to be able to get to click on finish to conform the Set Up of the Back Up without these being completed?

The Help Pages - DO NOT HELP - or address these items - so far as I can see.
And I cannot see any Forum for this specific GFI Program

    Assistance would be appreciated...........

Hi mcgerk, and welcome to MG :) Mind if I ask why you are trying to install this program? It is not required by Windows or by the user as there is a huge choice of backup programs available once you have Win 7 running satisfactorily. In fact Win 7 has its own backup program though most users prefer to use a third party app. If you had been using a decent backup program when the disk crash occurred you would not have had to set up Win 7 and your software again as it could have been restored from a backup to your new disk in less than half an hour.

The program is not recognising an earlier installation btw as a reinstall of Windows erases ALL history.

    Thank you.
I dealt with my System Back Up separately.
I am familiar with GFI Interface - & have used it to back up my Documents Files daily - for 5 years - so all I would like to do is reinstall something that i am familiar with that works OK for me.
    Its as simple as that.
That's why I was seeking assistance.

I have previously seen this LINK - I always try to solve problems myself - by researching - but- if you look at the LINK - you will not find the items that I am referring to on the final page prior to finishing the specific Back Up that I wish to set up - that is why I am seeking the answer to the the enquiry. Thank you.

GFI just isn't popular here. You may have to contact the publishers.

    In my original Post-I said:

GFI appear NOT to have any Support Pages for this Program.

All I wanted advice on was the answers to the questions:

The Simple Set Up Pages are fine until I get to the section in a Back Up - headed: SCHEDULER:

    USER AUTHENTICATION SETTINGS

You are just repeating yourself. What you need is someone familiar with the program, and atm it seems there aren't any here. What stops you emailing the publisher?

    Thank you.

As I said there is no Support for this Product at GFI.
It is a Freeware Product that is not listed on their Web Site.
There is no Support E-mail Address for this product only Support for Other -Paid For- Commercial Products.

That's why I posted a "Help" posting on the premier site for problem solving.

So can anyone even hazard a guess as to what might be the answers?

As I don't have much else pressing atm I thought I would install Gfi in a Win 7 virtual machine to see if I could answer your questions but I cannot find the Gfi Backup on their website. Where did you get yours from?

About a year since I opened my Win 7 VM so a bit of prep to do before using it. Anyway, about to take a look at Gfi. Back later.

OK, I just accepted the default fields in Scheduler and hit Next. Same on next page and hit Finish. The backup ran successfully. The User Name field was filled in automatically with my Win 7 user name

Has Softonic improved? I always thought it was a site that bundled everything with bloatware. I've always avoided it.

Me too. That's why I didn't want to install Gfi in my main system.

    @mcgerk are you sorted now?

    Thank you for your advice.
I have had NO issues with GFI - for years - it WAS simple & straightforward - but after reinstalling it ?????
The final Set Up Page - "Events" has items that I have treated as "Default" - & not changed them.
But - I still cannot get it to "Finish" & save the Set Up doing exactly what I though that I used to do - & what you have suggested.
    So still "lost".............

Suspect some other running software is interfering with the setup. Before setting up close everything else, including your AV.

The absence of a username may be the problem. If that field is still blank edit the task and try typing in your Windows username.

    Thank you
I have dealt with both suggestions - & this does not appear to resolve matters.
I will think about it...............but at present cannot identify the problem.

Run the program and on the first page, click on "About". What version is it?
Eldon gave the link for Softpedia in post #11. Its the only GFI Backup source I found that I reasonably trust. All the rest are dubious at best. I downloaded version 4.1 at Softpedia, installed and ran it smooth with no problem. I backed up the user/owner/desktop to Usb, manually, onetime only, accepting defaults. Without knowing your version, I don't think we can provide much further help.

Softpedia = trusted site for downloads
Softonic = untrusted sites for downloads (adds junk to downloads)

I get the sites confused because they both start with "soft".

It is Version 4.1 - thank you

It was 4.1 I used too, last updated six years ago. You may be very attached to Gfi but it's time for a change imo.

I suppose because it WAS a very solid way of doings things simply with all the relevant options that many others are not & do not have that I would prefer that it now worked for me. Tx for your comments.

With problems like this, if you can't replicate it it's hard to give advice. Have you tried a reinstall, in an Admin account of course?

I reran v4.1 and noticed in the "Source" everything but "Files & Folders" was greyed out, an obvious lack of functionality. This was described in a review by Nick Peers for version 4.0 https://www.techadvisor.co.uk/download/backup-recovery/gfi-backup-freeware-edition-2011-40-3214014/
I decided to try the 2009 vintage. I found version 3.0 at Tucows, using the Canada-Ontario mirror
    http://www.tucows.com/download.html?software_id=608865&t=2
I scanned the file download with 5 separate tools, including MBAM and VT via VShield. VShield came up with a valid, but unverified signature. Considering the age, I expected it and allowed the setup to run only after I uninstalled version 4.1, using REVO Advanced scan. Setup ran smooth and the v3.0 Source icons/options were all lit and all selected items were expandable. I selected the full registry, to USB, default Options, Run Manually, and default Events. Finish worked okay and the backup ran good. Afterward, I ran an MBAM threat scan, AdwCleaner, and Zemana AntiMalware ... all clean and no burps by VS during the whole process.
So, v3.0 might give you back some familiarity. It certainly has more functionality over v4.1. The Tucows source appears clean and safe in this instance, but I wouldn't make a habit to use it. Hope this helps you decide what to do.

Good catch! When I ran it I just did a files and folders backup and had no problems, but I failed to spot all the greyed out other options. Looks like the product was never fully tested for Win 7 and explains its absence from the Gfi website.
