Vlc Video Effects 3.0.1

I realize this is a long shot, but I'm having problems getting the video effects to work with VLCs' newest version (3.0.1). The problem is that when I check the "Image Adjust" box in the "Adjustments and Effects" area, the video becomes super bright (as if the "brightness" slider was moved all the way to the right), and none of the sliders work at all. When I uncheck the "Image Adjust" box, the video seems to look normal (as if the sliders were placed in the middle). This happened right after I updated the program (via Avast). I uninstalled VLC, including the cache, preferences, etc., and then reinstalled, but the problem remained. I then uninstalled again, and installed version 2.2.6, which was the latest older version I could find, and problem was resolved. I then removed 2.2.6, and reinstalled 3.0.1 but the problem was back. I checked with VLCs' forum, but could not find any one else complaining of this problem, let alone a resolution. I have already run scans with AVAST, and Malwarebytes, but they both came back clean.

Another curiosity that I discovered after removing 3.0.1 and reinstalling 2.2.6, was that when I click on check for updates, it says that I'm running the latest version, which of course is wrong. Any thoughts, or ideas of what is going on with my VLC would be very much appreciated.

I'm running Windows 10, if that matters.

I like the video adjustment tools in VLC but what I don't like is that you can't save them for just that video. If I adjust one that is too dark then the next one will be too bright and eventually they're all out of whack and hard to get it right. As far as the update check saying you have the latest version I'd guess it checks on some schedule and since you just downgraded it hadn't found the newer version available.

Thanks for replying to my question, Eldon. I tried your suggestion, but no joy. Still the same results. I deleted the highlighted registry items, after a "moderate" scan, assuming that was what I was supposed to do. Then restarted, and reinstalled 3.0.1 One other thing. Probably won't tell you anything, BUT, I noticed there is a heavy additional line under the "Hue" slider line. I've uploaded a screenshot so you can see what I'm talking about. Also, as you can see from the picture, moving the sliders all the way to the left have absolutely no effect.

The heavy line below Hue is indeed strange.
Reset the Video preferences and restart VLC.
If this doesn't help post on the VLC forum and upload the screenshot.

FWIW I have the latest VLC media player 3.0.1 (Windows 7) and the video effects work 100%.

Thanks Eldon. I'll try posting my problem to VLC forum as you suggested, and cross my fingers. Btw, tried resetting preferences, but no luck.

I kinda figured this was not a wide spread update problem before, but now unfortunately, I'm convinced.

I had VLC 2.2.4 and updated to 3.0.1.
I selected to 'Delete preferences and cache' during installation and everything works as intended.

Something else in your image is all the slider controls are blue. I have not seen that in any program.
I suspect the new version is somehow conflicting with your PC's graphics - either the drivers or perhaps hardware acceleration.
Do let us know what the members of the VLC forum say.

Well, I FINALLY stumbled upon a fix. I wanted to post it just in case others come across the same problem in the future. As Eldon suspected, the problem was with hardware acceleration. The hardware-accelerated decoding simply needed to be disabled using the "preferences" area of VLC. For those that don't already know how to do that just go to Tools>Preferences>Input/Codecs, and change the hardware-accelerated decoding in the "Codecs" section from "automatic" to "disable". To give full credit, I'm including the website that showed me how to do that. ttfn.
