I've Googled my issue and found many variations but no fixes that worked for me. I believe the problem started shortly after installing new Windows updates, but not immediately. Please tell me what additional info I need to add to help.

My desktop froze wile browsing the internet and now will boot up to the login screen. After I enter login/password I get a black screen with a cursor which I can only see on one of my two monitors. I am able to open and see the Task Manager and from there I have been able to open MS Config, but I don't know what to do from there. I have reverted back to the earliest save points which does not fix the black screen issue. I have restarted in safe mode with/without networking but still get the black screen.

I can't remember exactly what i did, but I was able to make it display the following error "File System Error 2147219200" which I did not find specifically when i Googled it. Restarting Windows Explorer does not change anything.

I opened device manager and all hardware shows "working properly" with correct drivers.

I'm stuck and I don't know what else to try. Any help is appreciated as my desktop is an expensive Ryzen paper weight now.

Sounds like you need to run SFC

Click on start menu. Then in search bar type CMD for command prompt.Right click on command prompt and have it run as administrator rights. Now while in command prompt Type as follows SFC /Scannow .This will scan your system for corrupted windows files.Let us know if there are any errors.

Then after that scan do a chkdsk /f there could be errors on your hard drive or ssd.It will ask you to reboot. It is required.

Might be hard to do, Wile, if all he has is a black screen.

I have a black screen, no start menu, no anything. I think I can pull up a command prompt from msconfig though. I will try that when I get home tonight.

If you can open a command prompt, type in:
    rstrui.exe
    Hit enter

    It should run.

You can try to use the command prompt through this section.

When I ran SFC /Scannow it didn't do anything that I could tell. The cursor dropped down a line as if it was doing something but I let it sit for about 30 minutes and heard no hard drive noise so I closed and re opened the command prompt and ran CHKDSK /F which ran and when the pc rebooted I logged into windows still with black screen.

TIM W: I did a system restore before I ever posted here to the earliest point available and it didn't change anything.

UPDATE: Before I posted this comment I ran SFC again and it worked. The result "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations."

NOTE: A window popped up after a asking me to update iTunes which I thought was interesting. Also a correction, both my monitors are working, I can see the cursor on both, however both are black screen. Clicking the Windows keyboard button does not appear to do anything, I though i might be able to use it blind, but the function doesn't appear to be there. I'm wondering, however, if there's an issue with my video card drivers as a result of a windows update.

Then I would suggest you try one of your monitors on another system.

Both monitors work fine on 2 other machines.

Just out of curiosity, get into task manager and click start a new process....choose an installed program and wait and see if it opens.

Ok, I just tried that, and its stranger than I thought... I was able to log in remotely with Chrome remote desktop (because I'm at work and desktop is home). I was able to open iTunes (first thing that came to mind) successfully. Than I closed it and it won't open anything else, including iTunes now. I suspect with a reboot I'd be able to do it again.

So it displayed? This is getting curious.

You might consider power down, remove one monitor and reboot. If still no go, get into device manager and uninstall your graphics card. Reboot.

Yes, and as I suspected, after rebooting I was able to open another app, this time I opened Chrome and was able to browse the internet. After I closed it I was not able to open again without rebooting. Does this sound like a Windows Explorer issue? I stopped the Explorer process and restarted but nothing changed. Maybe something in the registry got messed up after a Windows update?

There are times it could happen that Windows 10 is just not detecting the display.
Using your keyboard, you can use the Windows key + Ctrl + Shift + B keyboard shortcut should wake up your display.

And then you might have to update your video drivers.

Try Disconnecting non-essential devices. To see if any are causing this issue.
