Well, I installed the new RAM on Monday but today my pc keeps freezing at the Verifying DMI Pool window saying "A disk read error occurred".

I was going to reinstall Windows and set CD ROM as first boot device in BIOS but my pc just keeps trying to boot to Windows again. What can I do?

Last week, my pc kept freezing when booting up. It was determined that it was a ram problem. I bought new ram and my pc has been running fine since I installed it. Today, it won't boot to Windows again. I have XP Pro X64 installed. At the Verifying DMI Pool Data Window, I get the message "A disk read error occurred."

Is it telling me that there's a problem with the hard drive or with windows?

It's been a few years since I reinstalled Window so I thought I'd try that but even tho I selected CD ROM drive as 1st in boot order in Bios, it keeps trying to boot to Windows. Could the CD drive be connected to the wrong USB port on my mono? I had temporarily disconnected it when I had the RAM problem and just connected to any port.

    Thanks for the link.

I disconnected all but the C drive and unseated and reseated the RAM and my pc booted to Windows.

I haven't tried to reconnect all the other hard drives yet, 1 at a time, but I'll do that.

So it's not Windows, a C hard drive or RAM problem?

How many drives do you have?

I should have asked internal drives.

Something in your hard drive configuration setup is interfering with the bios ability to run the OS master boot record.

As you said, plug em in one at a time until she strikes again!

I'll be doing that, just haven't had the time this weekend.

Does anyone know the reason why my pc doesn't do anything with the Windows disk in my CD ROM drive when I changed 1st boot order in BIOS to CD ROM? Could it be connected to the wrong USB port on my motherboard? It's a GIGABYTE GA-EP45-DQ6 LGA 775 Intel P45 ATX

We need more info on the above. Exactly how/where are you connecting the CD ROM drive?
The motherboard has 2 x USB 2.0/1.1 headers, not actual USB ports.

I have never heard of 12 hard drives connected. Are you possibly using RAID on these drives.
    USB 1.1/2.0
    8 x USB 2.0

The motherboard supports 10 SATA and 2 IDE devices.

I also have a HighPoint RocketRAID 2300 PCI Express SATA II 8-Port Controller Card installed to connect some of the drives to. The drives are in a JBOD configuration, not RAID. I connected the CD ROM drive to a yellow port on the motherboard, not the controller card.

I don't know the difference between "headers" and "ports." All USB hard drive connectors can connect to all of them.

Ok. I notice there are 2 yellow and 2 white USB connectors.
    FYI
Cheaper motherboards have USB headers to which USB brackets connect to.
Your motherboard already has the USB brackets.

Apart from changing the boot device in the BIOS, you can also select a boot device when the PC starts by pressing a key - on mine it's F12.
Check your manual which can be downloaded from here.

On page 36, it says that I can press F12 at start up and it'll take me to the boot menu without entering BIOS. I'll give it a shot, thanks.
