At one point there was some kind of ad-hoc network set up on this laptop in order to share a tethered connection. We need to have it removed.

It doesn't show anywhere in the control panel. Sometimes it shows up in the Wifi connection list as "Hidden network". It shows on other devices like phones with the name "DIRECT-LD(computer name)msPF".

With "ipconfig /all", I see this below, which I think will help. I'm not sure how to delete either the wifi-direct virtual adapters or permanently disable the connection. I'd appreciate some help. Thanks.

Does it show in Device Manager?

It was created either by Microsoft's Virtual PC or Hyper-V, the virtual machine software available for Windows. If you are on Win 10 it would be Hyper-V, otherwise Virtual PC. It's harmless.

    No.

Maybe the virtual adapter was, but the wifi access point coming from the laptop was NOT.

I still need a way to remove the wifi access point or ad-hoc network that is always present.

OK, Network and Sharing Center > Change Adapter Settings will show every adapter on the system, both wired and wireless. You can remove or disable any adapter by right clicking it, unless it's greyed out for some reason.

It should, but it isn't there. Trust me. I've been doing I.T for a long time. I'm just not familiar with this particular type of hacky workaround. It's still there, it doesn't show, but there must be a way to remove it.

It's apparently coming through the hostednetwork doodad.

Netsh wlan show hostednetwork gives some details on the connection
Netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=disallow doesn't disable it.
Netsh wlan stop hostednetwork doesn't either.

Apparently Microsoft doesn't give a good way to delete it, and using the appropriate commands didn't work. I had to delete the configuration in "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\currentcontrolset\services\wlansvc\parameters\hostednetworksettings" manually and reboot.

Now it's gone, no errors in the system log, and netsh wlan show hostednetwork says it's not configured, as it should.
