Windows 7 Update Problems

Most of the monthly security updates are failing. The computer had some infections which were cleaned, but these updates, since October 17 are still failing. The September 17 monthly security rollup installed no problems once I had cleaned the machine and and there have been other security updates , even the most recent ones, that have also installed successfully. It's just these monthly security rollups that won't install.

I have run the Windows Update trouble shooter which says it fixed problems but the updates still failed to install. I also ran the sfc that says it found some corrupted files some of which it could not fix. I had a look at the CBS log file to try to identify which one's couldn't be fixed by the log was huge and difficult to read. I was following suggestions on Microsoft support and one of them was to also run DISM but that failed code 38. However both the sfc and DISM failures happened before I was able to get the September 17 rollup to successfully install.

It appears that a lot of the monthly rollup updates have already been downloaded and I was wondering if those downloads are corrupted.

Can someone help me get these updates installed and maybe advise how I can delete any downloaded updates so I can re-download them in case they are corrupted?

I would very much appreciate any help you can give me

    thanks

Try our own Eldon's updated version of sfc /scannow- it will load the results on the desktop, and may help us to help you

Also try CHKDSK /F, and restart for it to work on boot, in case you have a bad spot on the hard drive- CHKDSK /F will attempt to sort it .

Thanks very much for your response. I forgot to mention that I had already run CHECKDSK but with the /R switch, and no problems were found. I have attached the log generated by your sfc utility - thanks for that! Before I contacted you I did consider doing an in-place re-install of Win 7 but when I saw all the programs that would be affected (and need re-installing) I decided against it.

Thanks for your help. I was able to successfully restore the corrupt DDORes.dll to the Windows\SysWOW64 folder. I ran the sfc utility and confirm that there were no errors found. Rebooted the machine and ran Windows Update and the updates are still failing (error codes 80004005 and 80073712). Ran the Windows Update Troubleshooter which did not find any issues. Also tried to run the latest rollup update manually after downloading the update from Microsoft (KB4103718) without success. Where to from here?

vkinetic, we have two OS 7 rigs and have not updated them in four years. :)

I had to reinstall dows 7 and the downloaded of over 218 updates (over five hours to complete)
with start up time taking 2.5 minutes.:mad: (SATA I HDD) A copy on anther HDD with dows 7 and only SP1,
takes only 50 seconds to boot. :p (SATA III HDD)

The advice I received from one man, was to stop the updates unless the rig is running
    bad.

The problem with not updating, is that many 'holes' are plugged by these- I would recommend to choose updates, when possible.

Baklogic, not sure what you mean by many holes are plugged by these?

Many updates are to close any faults found after initial new operating system is distributed. Hackers find ways to get into the system- Microsoft is forever plugging, or, putting sticky tape over these'holes' to beat the hackers, in the updates they bring out.
Good anti-virus can stop many, but sometimes an anti-virus will download these fixes from Microsoft to keep the system running securely.

Thanks everyone. After working through all the suggestions (except doing an in-place upgrade/repair install), we were unable to fix the issue. Strangely other updates, including some security updates are being installed. It's just these monthly security roll-up updates that aren't installing. We don't want to do a repair install so we are just making sure that there is good security running on the machine.

Patches fix vulnerabilities in the operating system kernel.

If you do not update, you leave your machine more vulnerable.
