File Sharing Windows 10 To Windows 8.1 Not Working

I have a folder on my windows 10 home computer that I am trying to share with my windows 8.1 computer. I have selected "turn on..." in Advanced sharing settings under "private."

The windows 10 home computer is 64 bit, the windows 8.1 embedded industry pro (this should work just like windows 8.1 industry pro) computer is 32 bit.

I also shared a file on the windows 8.1 computer with the win 1o computer and that worked.

Probably need to tweak the folder's security settings. If password protected sharing has been set to on then the 8.1 user has to have a user account on 10 and in the folder's Security tab you have to give the 8.1 user the level of access you want, i.e. read only, full, etc. If password protected sharing is off then you have to set the access permissions for user Everyone.

Ok. I created a user account that has the same username and password as my Windows 8.1 user account. That worked.
However, when I am in front of the Windows 8.1 machine, I also noticed a folder named users (in addition to the folder that I had set to share). This users folder had a set of folders in it that led to the same directory as the one that I was trying to (and had now been able to successfully) share. I think it just had the set of folders that led to the shared folder, without any other sub directories being visible. In other words, even though the "users" folder has 3 subfolders in it, only one of those shared folders showed when I click on the user folder. The reason that this user folder was probably visible is because when I was trying to get the sharing to work, probably I toggled a setting that caused this. So, I went to the folder on the Windows 10 computer and unshared the users folder.

One thing that was interesting is that when I sat down at the Windows 8.1 machine and clicked on the shared folder, there was no password required, even though the new user account (with the matching name) that I had now set up on the Windows 10 computer, I did set up with a password. Anyway, it's probably just some other setting.

Not sure I have followed all of that but try setting the new password to something different from that used on 8.1.

EDIT- are you sure that password protected sharing has been set?

I was saying before that on my windows 8.1 computer when I go to network, there were the following 2 items under the Windows 10 computer:
    1) users/myUserName/documents/folderIWantToShare
However, I reacted to this one by turning off sharing for the "users" folder because I didn't like that whole big chain of folders to click through.*

    2) a folder folderIWantToShare (without having to click through the whole directory).

*after doing this I saw that only "2)" was showing

But now several hours, and at least one reboot I am back to not seeing any folders on the Windows 10 computer.

I am also not sure how to change the password for the account that I created this morning. I suppose I can just delete it and then create a new one. But, from what you have said, it seems as though the new one will have to be the same username as the account on the Windows 8 machine that I will be logged into.

I suspect that after disabling the share for the Users folder you would need to recreate the share for 'folderIwantto share' as the folder is in the Users tree. Hopefully that may be all you need to do so I suggest you forget about usernames and passwords for the moment.

I can't replicate your problem here as I don't use usernames and passwords on my LAN, I just share to the Everyone user as I don't need to protect access to my folders within the LAN.

Trying to work with changing the settings for "everyone" does not work and has never worked.
Also, for some reason, on one of the screens, Windows changes the permissions to setting that I did not put.

On of the things that I am confused about is the terminology.
For example, what does everyone refer to?
    -Everyone in the world
-All user accounts on this computer
-All user accounts on the local network

Also, I am the only one that uses these computers and files.

Can you post a pic of the Security tab of the folder CS_OSU_CS162 please?

I'm not a professional so can't guarantee this is a full and correct answer but it's basically any computer that can connect to your router and be assigned an IP address in the LAN subnet range. If that's not right then maybe someone will correct it.

As you are the only user then using Everyone would simplify local networking compared with using usernames and passwords. I'm pretty sure your inability to use it relates to your Security settings which hopefully the pic will reveal.

Ok, thanks for the info in your other post.
As an aside, one thing that I recently noticed is that Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 have a snipping tool. Previously, I would open up Evernote in order to get screen captures, which was a more cumbersome process.

Thanks for the pic. If you still cannot see the shared folder from 8.1 I'm a bit stumped atm as the settings look good. Maybe it's the Johnnie Walker ;) I'll come back when my head's a little clearer.

Johnnie Walker. That reminds me when I was young (around 12 years old) one of my friends had all kinds of Johnny Walker memorabilia. One of his relatives had some sort of a liquor business. Still was not typical to have all of that stuff at that age. I forget what it all was.. posters, obviously, but I think other stuff, too.

I can shed some more light on the situation now.
In the security settings that you directed me to, I have now changed the settings for "everyone."
"read & execute" -> unchecked allow
"List folder contents" -> unchecked allow (in hindsight, I am not sure why I unchecked the "List folder contents" because I can't see any security issue with that)

After making the changes, I am now able to see the windows 10 computer when I am in "network" directory on the windows 8.1 machine.
When I click on the computer name for the windows 10 machine, I am prompted to enter a username and a password. So, I enter a username and password for the account that I use on the Windows 10 computer. After that, my windows 8.1 computer displays 3 folders (in its parent directory)
One is my user folder (titled with my username). I imagine the computer is allowing all rights on that folder and it's treating me as though I am actually sitting in front of my Windows 10 computer. However, I haven't actually tested this theory.

Next, there are 2 other folders in this same directory. These are 2 folders on my Windows 10 machine that are accessible by "everyone" in the security tab.
And actually one of them has settings that match what I screen shotted a couple of posts ago (the "capture3" file that I uploaded (allow for read/write, list folder contents, and read).

Good progress. Are you there now?
