New Computer For Me, Yet Older Computer

I used the forums once before to help with laptop issues from my old Dell Latitude E6410. In March my house caught fire and caused my laptop to lock up. Now, I have a new computer (for me) but the same model I had with the exception of the processor. This new one is bigger.

Now this computer is starting to have issues. It is at random times, displaying a black box which stays about 2-5 seconds then disappears. Not sure as to what this is from or what it does. It also does not light the keyboard as the other one did. When I try and turn on that feature, it just does not work.

I purchased this laptop from Ebay.

I was trying to find out what the downloads were, that I was to use first before continuing to a forum to discuss the results?

    Thank you for reading.

This could be a heat problem...

    Download this Speccy--->>http://www.majorgeeks.com/mg/get/speccy,1.html

Install Speccy make sure you do a custom install i think it might install chrome web browser just an FYI...

Then copy a picture for us to see the temps and specs.

    Like so.I use snipping tool

Your temps will be in C not F.

    You have good spec's.

    56 Celsius is a tad bit hot.That's 132.0 Fahrenheit...A bit toasty for a computer.

So you are saying up top that this is a laptop to confirm and not a desktop.

If this is a laptop then you are having heat issues. Most laptops should not go above 110 Fahrenheit be cause it's a confined space and very little air flow.

The Specs i showed you is my laptop. It run's 24/7 with out a down time unless power goes out.Which is rarely for me.

    Any who.

First thing you need to do is make sure there is no dust blocking any vents. If it seems that there is a little hint of dust i would go to your local store and buy a couple of Disposable Compressed Air Duster cans. You can buy them at walmart too or any local store. Then air out the vents on the laptop. When you do this make sure your laptop is turned off and unplugged and battery is taken off.

Secondly if you are sitting this down flat like on a table it's blocking the air vent.So there is no cold fresh air getting through. It need's to be propped up around a 45 degree angle.

If you don't have a laptop cooling pad i would recommend getting one. They are all about the same.

Then i would recommend getting this item as well. What this does is it sucks out the hot air.Which is what most laptops really need.I use this on my laptop and have had it for a year now and works well.

This is called a opolar laptop fan is very easy to install takes about ten mins not even.

Much depends on the ambient temperature. 50-60°C on a notebook is fine, your i7-640m CPU is designed with a limit of around 100°C (wile e coyote's is 90°C) though cooler is better, of course.

Speccy can raise the temps a degree or two, it tends to push the Windows kernel activity up a little, as that has high priority, user programs have to work harder to get the attention of the kernel, pushing up the overall CPU%. This is more noticeable on very low-powered machines, on higher powered computers like the Latitude E6410 it would be less so.

Bad idea. That makes it easier to tip over; disastrous for a laptop.
Get 2 pieces of wood, perhaps old rulers. (or hang around home improvement centers and see if they have any scraps of wood. :p ) Put them under each side of the laptop so air can flow under the laptop and remove hot air.

Both AMD and Intel processors run at different temps.

AMD temps tend to run a little hotter.
I would recommend a laptop cooling pad lol.The pad i have has holders to prevent it from sliding off.

I use a Targus passive cooler on two netbooks. (It it out of production now) I've had my A targus.jpg sus since Jan. 2008 and one Acer since Aug. 2011 with no signs of heat problems. I did not want to give up a USB port for a cooler. Plus this passive device makes it more portable.

A little tip for you about the USB port.If you do not want to give up a USB port you can either buy a android plug and just plug it into the wall out let. This is what i do.And in return it gives the laptop cooling pad full power not 50%.

Or buy one of these like i have. This USB Hub works well.I have an extra 4 usb ports out of the 3 i have.

Might you be referring to the set of 5 malware analysis tools, used in the Malware Help (Specialist) forum? These are the only group of "downloads", which have remained consistently in place for a long time on this site, that I am aware of. Please look at the sticky thread at the beginning of that forum, entitled "Read & Run Me First Removal Guide." If this is what you had in mind, then follow the guide instructions, create a thread in that forum, asking for a malware check.

That's a pain because I carry my laptop to different rooms of the house. I don't want to plug and unplug a cooler every time I move the laptop. The passive cooler is perfect. The cooler sits between the laptop and a wooden board that holds my mouse pad and mouse. I pick up the board and move around from room to room or outside.

Like I said in the above post. You can buy an external Usb port. That can support between 4 and 8 extra ports. For around 25 or 35 dollar's.

Again, a passive cooler that uses no USB ports, costs under $20 and is portable is better for me because it is portable. I don't want excess things hanging off the laptop.

I do own several powered USB hubs but no desire to attach them to my "portable" laptop".
