    Hi all

Question for you all and those of you who have remote access to work email address, if you are on vaction or say weekends, would you open email to check on whats going on and reply, or wait to see whats waiting in your inbox when you are back in work?

I have remote access to works and I ponder at times do I logon or not, kinda think I could stave off earlier some issues or do I build them up till the following week, also its do I open them and get annoyed at home and ruin a good vacation or weekend.

Have accessed in past, just resisting at present, as thinking why should I as if I do view/answer any, I may as well be in work. Just never asked this question to anyone before.

Does you folks in your worldly locatons have say a rule of thumb on emails when on vacation?
I know a few folk that bulk delete emails in timescale they were on vaction....!
I filter loads of specific emails in work from staff notices, IT alerts, NHS various alerts, A&E status etc into various folders so likely leaves important stuff in main inbox, makes it easier to filter the chaff out.

I have an iphone from work. It has their email and messaging system installed. I'm listed as myself and also in a group labeled 'technicians'. I often get emails or messages overnight, on weekends and on vacations. I leave the phone on in case a worker is trying to contact me or if the office needs some info. Some users are always sending blanket messages to the technicians and all responses go to all technicians. If I delete a chain of emails, as soon as anyone responds later the whole chain comes back. I get annoyed of it, but mostly forget about it after it settles down.

Cheers for insight into your working practices vis-à-vis wotk phone an emails. I agree with you on chains and I have a work group two one is to clinicians and research the other to all dept staff, hate it when same email goes to both, you have in one group 100 or so and in dept 500+

I dont have work phone thankfully, do have two personal ones, one I do give the number to work related folk, keep the other main one for personal and direct clinicians/managers in work.

    Hi Dave,
I set an autoresponder at server level and still accept emails. My autoresponder says something similar to "Currently I am on annual leave and will only have sporadic access to emails. For any very urgent enquiries please contact ****** via this link ********.
For all other queries or correspondence, I will attend to these when I return to work on ******"
Doing this way I can still see my emails every day on my phone and I may respond to any important issues but if I don't then the autoresponder is my excuse.

Yep I still check my emails every day (usually two or three times)......maybe I am too much of a sticky beak

If I am already in discussion about some issue with somebody then I will still deal with it when I am on holiday as it is better to interrupt my holiday and have it done right rather than fixing up a mess when you are just coming back from a holiday and there are dozens of other things needing your attention plus an extra problem that could have been be fixed by a few minutes attention on your holiday. Probably this approach wouldn't suit everyone but I get up people and staff for not doing the right thing so I do have to set an example of doing the right thing to others as I don't want to be judged a hypocrite ;)

    Hey Pete

Yes I add OOO to mine with Im away till x date and any urgent matters then contact and I add a few names.
I just think if I logon to works Online Outlook and read any emails as some can be fairly technical, I may waste a few hours replying, some can be quick but if I reply to a group email, some folk may think I'm in and ask other things.

Hahahaha on skicky beak, thats my dilema at times, but know deep down I need rest and downtime.

Thats the issue at times finding the right person, TBH most of time better dealing with things myself, when back in.

Hehehe if I am in a group discussion and it is important but not critical I respond I may have been known to send a holiday pic of me sitting in a deck chair relaxing somewhere drinking a beer or glass of red and mentioning I am still enjoying my holiday and will respond to any issues on my return but please carry on discussing in my absence lolol

I like dealing personally with important things in my control because then if something goes wrong I will at least know everything possible was done so won't be left wondering would we have had a successful outcome if person X had only thought to do something a bit differently.

BTW I am writing from the new place in Pak tethered to my phone.....spent the day building my new custom computer room desk that is L shaped and built insitu and mounted to the walls.....it is now half finished.......BTW I have been meaning to write but so overloaded with things to do.....will catch up shortly :D:cool:

You know, it's not only mail or messages. How many times have you came up with answers to a situation when you were on your own time? I've often figured out stuff just 'cuz it was there rolling around in this melon. Or maybe I'm doing something similar on my own and figure how it can be applied to some project we have at work. Doing this same work since '92 so I couldn't begin to think of the amount of personal time spent reflecting on company business!

FREQUENTLY, found issue with a AI based study , changed a clinic proceedure, changed clinic documents etc, currently today a newsletter for local optometrists came into my "melon" have basic template already designed, oh also I have designed logos and documents for work. Most of the time work does not have the software to easily do tasks and if asking IT dept to install said somftware its like I'm taking their 1st born away from them the walls that go up.

    Imandy, know the feeling.
