Whitelist Instructions

    Hello folks Im Trippin42 and I need some help I opened my up Majorgeeks using Opera ( use on all devices) and when I go to click on a catagory the screen ghosts out and there is a button that says SHOW WHITELIST INSTRUCTIONS below that is POWERED BY ADMIRAL although it looks like something generated by magorgeeks I dont have the same message on any other device which includes 2 pc 1 laptop and 2 ipads. I have clicked on things like this in the past and regretted it . If i have posted this in wrong place or wrong form pardon me Im new

    I got the same message and am attaching the screen shot of it. I'm not sure what it is but will see if I can find out. I got mine while using Firefox

    We WERE testing a script that notifies people blocking ads that we'd appreciate them whitelisting the site.

    that message pops up every time i open firefox because i have majorgeeks set as homepage . actually was set because i am annoyed by that popup so i set google as homepage .

    I'll refrain from visiting MG if this message persists to popup. If you stop it I might change my mind and whitelist MG. But definitely not before.

    This has basically nothing to do with MG, Tim. It's just my decision if I want to have half of the screen full of advertising or not. I fully understand that nothing is for free and that the owners need money to keep the site alive. For that reason adblockers usually don't filter out everything. However I don't accept any kind of extortion and I will fight against the onset of acting that way on sites that try (to the benefit of sites that don't try). If enough users do so then site owners will hopefully avoid messing up their business.

    Yes they will. As I said adblockers usually keep some advertising.

    I tell you what. It's not too long ago that I whitelisted every site I signed up just to support them. Meanwhile advertising becomes rampant. Overlaying ads are the plague and it sometimes takes ages to load the site. But again, I would whitelist MG because it's still moderate. But not before they change the behavior of forcing users to disable their adblockers. That makes the difference, at least for me.

    The ads you see are usually from companies that pay an extortion fee from that ad blocking company's. MajorGeeks.com see no benefit from that whatsoever. I have said this since ad blockers first can out. They will crush small to midsize sites. They will force more intrusive adverting and they will then force the internet into a subscription model.

    But I love how flippant some folks are- How about I tell you that you will go to work for the same amount of time and effort - but instaed of 100% of your check you'll get 50% because I feel like blocking it. It's no different.,

    We have been a leader of the clean ad movement since before it was a thing -- we get littler credit for that. People forget easily. But we will be adding something like that pop window. If you feel that asking someone to unblock is extortion - so be it. We have few options available to us and we don't do this for our health.

    There is hardly any site I go to for facts or news that does not request I turn off the adblocker. You may find yourself very lonely out there.

    Okay one last answer (I promise).

    Bad news is that site owners expect that people accept it and unfortunately you proof that they might be right. So please don't wonder if you are bothered everywhere with that kind of messages and sites full of advertising in future. I'm not that unconcerned and draw consequences just to show that it's still worth to engage.

    Good news is that you really don't need to worry about me ;) MG is the 3rd site I left in the past few years (first two because of excessive overlaying advertising at a time where I still whitelisted those sites as I told above). There are enough sites out there that still respect their users and I'm quite active on a couple of other websites. So no I'll be neither lonely nor bored :D

    There's a website I frequent which offers free, ad-based use or a paid, ad-free option. Something to consider for those who don't want ads and understand it cost money to run this site. I don't know how easy that would be to implement but I'm throwing it out there.

    There are a lot of sites that use Ad's to track people's internet search.Hench the reason for Ad-blockers.There are quit a few ad's that use tracking cookies and target people.

    There are sites out there that get infected with whats called.A redirecting virus or malware.These sites redirect to other web pages,That cause harmful thing to your computer.Hence the reason for adblockers.And pop up controllers.

    Let me tell you about extortion. You don't accept extortion and you noticed some ads get by, but you don't even know why. You do notice often times those ads you see are the more popular websites or ad networks?

    Your beloved ad blockers are allowing ads and they collect 30%. That's right. Ads are allowed through by AD BLOCKERS, but only if your a large enough website or advertiser to be accepted. So, your being extorted by the program you think is helping you while sticking it to the little guy like us. If you don't want to be extorted, support MajorGeeks and not these thieves.

    This is the typical David Vs Goliath and it breaks my heart that a few people are complaining because a pop up appears every 5 or 6 pages asking you to whitelist. People claim to love our website but won't support us. I call bullshit. We work 7 days a week, no days off, no vacations and have for 20 years. We have expenses from software, multiple servers and more.

    We'd prefer to have you here but consider this. You come here, block ads and we don't make a dime. OR, you don't come here. What's the difference to us? Please don't take it the wrong way, we'd rather have you, but this is our reality.

    Another thing to consider. Our ads are fairly unobtrusive, at least as much as possible. You don't need to click on them, just let them show. Down the road, we might be all Google ads because, as we said, the ad market is going to shit.

    I always like to end with a question. Do you work somewhere that I can come and get free shit every day? So far, I have yet to have anyone take me up on this. I also assume I can just come steal from wherever you work because, why should I pay?

    Apparently, it's a one-way street.

    Thank you. It's a simple, occasional click to NOT disable ads. We've found many of our true fans with a conscience are willing to whitelist us.

    I've told people before the problem is 50% are blocking our ads. Imagine walking into work today and being told to work more hours and your pay is being cut 50%. What would you do?

    Cookies, LOL. Privacy is dead. Everyone is tracking you everywhere you go. Mobile is out of control!!!!! Ads look where you go to show you relevant ads. If we showed you an ad for douches, odds are you won't click it. Cookies are not much more than a text file. As mentioned before, you don't have to click an ad and we use trusted, reliable ad networks. While there are certainly some rogue ad servers out there, they are typically used on small, scam websites intended to do just that, often redirecting people from social media. NOT MajorGeeks.

    Over the years visiting multiple sites everyday, i have developed a tunnel like vision when it comes to advertising anyway!
    Ofcourse some sites are way more intrusive with advertising than others.

    The main issue for me occurs when sites use iframe pop-ups that require user intervention to clear them out of the way of something a user is trying to input within that site. (ie a post, login creds etc)
    Its ok for me for sites to have non-intrusive advertising such as those sitting around the headers and footers as MG's do.
    This is perfectly normal.
    I also know that you would never find malicious content such as a redirect, hidden behind any ads that appear here.

    Majorgeeks has never been a website that uses intrusive advertising in such a fashion as i described above, and i do perfectly understand the need to raise revenue in order to deliver to us what they do, namely safe, free, downloadable software.
    Nothing runs completely for free today.

    I therefore do not have a problem with adding MG's to my Whitelist at all, and yes, i am a stickler for our rights and privacy online.

    Did you read about that I used adblockers with care in the past just to support websites like yours? The day came when I was simply fed up with whitelisting sites because the majority of the websites advertise intrusively. You want me to support MG? Just read my first reply. I've nothing against to just see a sentence in the header of the website where you explain that you use advertising with care and that you want users to support your free service by whitelisting the site. Compare that with LauraR's screenshot and you may understand why I was talking about extortion (or you may not).

    I hate to answer that way because all I did in the forum was because I enjoyed it.
    I came to MG because I saw some interesting questions. I spent my time for free to answer. If people found (and maybe still find) my answers helpful I might have been one of the guys that made the site more valuable for users, helped MG to get more clicks, helped MG to earn money. So you've got free shit at least from my side. Even my farewell is still a last strong attempt to keep the site more frequented by convincing you to give up this wrong way.

    What annoys me is that a mob called Admiral is foisted on me without any notice.
    I have no knowledge of Admiral or what they may do while the popup is on my screen.

    I turned off ublock for MG's. Also disabled ghostery for the home page. Still see very little ads. I see the standard facebook, youtube, twitter, and maybe pinterest or other. None of which I use. I have a column on the right labeled 'advertisment' that changes content. But I do have an average of 23 trackers show up. That seems to be 4 times as many ads as I see. What's up with these?

    Most likely some of the smaller ads you see, the (possibly) new ad block detector, and social media. Another possibility, if you click on a page with an affiliate link is possible. They all add up. That said, I will ask Jim why so many to see if we can cut that back. Thanks for your support and feedback!

    I also use an iphone during the day that has an adblocker on it that has never been enabled. It shows the social buttons across the top and right now has a banner across the top for IOBit system care. Nothing else. Do you get credit for mobile connections? I probably check in about 5 times a day on that device.

    I believe what you are seeing is the social media plugins. I'm trying to do away with the service we use and code them directly because they are crazy java heavy.. It's on the list anyway. Does anyone have some tips? :)
    It may also be the web server analytics. But we do not use anything other than that that tracks movement.

    Steffen please reconsider, we all love your input here there is no doubt or debate there!

    Most sites today will ask you to whitelist as the new EU laws regarding the placement of session cookies come into effect.

    I agree with you that some sites dont deserve the right to ask this from us, but as i said, and as you know, MG's has never been intrusive with regards to this.
    Its simply a request by a trusted site that we all have grown to love over the years.

    Just a simple script experiment in order to show their intended sponsors that members here will actually see whats displayed in a non-intrusive manner......they dont want you to give up your kids or eat your pets!

    Hello, MG. I wasn't trying to start world war 3 over ad blockers. I did not know what "whitelist" meant, I do now. I asked because I have been tricked in the past, so I always try to find out what something is instead of blindly clicking. If Major Geeks wants me to unblock then I will unblock. Not a problem. This is my "go-to" site to get anything in software and it is the ONLY site I trust. I don't download anything unless I get it here.

    Hello....I wasn't bitching ..I just did not know what it was. The reference to White list was unfamiliar to me. Like I said, if Major Geeks wants me to turn off the ad blocker then NO problem. Happy to do it

    I would remind people that this is a two-person team working seven days a week. Everything here is provided for free, but our time, like yours, is valuable. If you want to find evil out there, I can get you a list. We like to think we're the good guys and that you'd consider supporting us. As time goes on, we're like the small local hardware store or grocery store slowly being crushed by WalMart, for example. Make no mistake, the top 100+ websites want to dominate and the top ten? Forget about it. If you can live with that, well, I guess we can too.
