My PC is thoroughly hacked, but that isn't my problem. I'm able to deal with it, and my data is secured elsewhere.
I just got an electric bill that was almost 3 times normal.
    So my question is:
Can the fact that malware can make a PC work harder actually have a meaningful effect on the light bill?

Meaningful? Yes. 3 times normal? No way! Compared to other devices in the hope - particularly refrigerators and air conditioners, PCs draw little power.

But even to be meaningful, your PC would have to be up and running, and at full load nearly 24/7 for the full billing cycle.

Note a 3 time electric bill can easily mean your air conditioner compressor is failing, or nearly out of coolant. Or a neighbor has tapped in your power!

I don't have, or need, an air conditioner. Where I live, fans are enough. But I just wanted to be sure that my PC equipment wasn't the cause.
    Thanks!

Depending how many Big box fans you have they can draw a lot of power.Same with Ceiling fans.

I have had 4 of my ceiling fans run all summer due to the fact it gets hot in my house.

But i have 4 Box fans in my basement running to keep the floor dry as possible. They will increase your electric bill about 10 to 15 dollars a month depending on how hot your area gets.

FYI if you use a electric portable heater. This will all so cause your electric bill to sky rocket. If left on all the time.

Hope? If not obvious, that should have been "house".

If this is still a problem, I recommend you go around your house and unplug everything! Don't just turn it off as many things (including PCs, TVs, microwave ovens, etc.) just go into standby mode when turned off. They have to be unplugged to really stop drawing power. Then go look at your power meter. If it is still spinning, something is consuming electricity. You might have to flip the specific circuit breaker for some hardwired devices like central furnaces, water heaters, dishwashers, etc. Just don't flip the main breaker. Check all your lights too. Make sure you don't have outdoor or closet lights turned on all day.

Without an AC, your refrigerator/freezer is likely your most power hungry device(s) as these run (or cycle on and off), 24/7/365. If low on coolant, they will cycle on and consume more energy. More people in the house means the door will be opened more often, and that means more energy consumed. If the door seals are dirty or damaged, or the doors are loose or out of shape preventing a good seal, more energy will be consumed.
