    I'm back !
    with a New how-to
There is way, well, there used to be - doesn't seem to work
anymore for at least some files, if not all - of saving a webpage
in MS Internet Explorer in a format such that the visual formt
is preserved (which it isn't if I save it in any kind of print like
pdf) but a format that contains all the information [like pictures,
links as they appear in the text] but the links don' t necessarily go anywhere
if you are offline or if the website has removed that link..
The format is stored in *.mht file (still is but seem to be complete for some files now)
Is there the an analagous way of saving the webpage in Firefox ?
I'm sure there used to be, but I've just tried if
and it only gives the options of full html, hmtl only,
or plain text, none of which do the job, I think

I'm using windows 7 Home Preniun

In Firefox, click File > Save Page As... and the default should be Web Page, complete.
    I'm using Windows 7 and Firefox 59.0.2.

Thank you for your answer. I was just using ctrl-s to bring up the save dialog.
However, I have tried now clicking on the 3 horizontal lines at the top right of my firefox (v. 61.0.2)
and selecting 'save page as' from the drop drop menu
Now I am faced with a whole set of mostly minor problems
The only major problem is that I'm still experiencing a failure to save the ebay purchase order webpage in IOE or Firefox, even online recall.
IE saves the listing pages ok, aside my pdf printer doesn't do a job job of formatting it
But it fails to save the the *.mht page and the HTML page properly (in fact only some kind of ebay header is viewed)
But then I save the listing page with Firefox it does not save it with the name I give it (same name with '_FF' appended); no, it overwrites the full html file file saved by IE replacing it it with the latter's name but changing the file type to 'Chrome HTML'. The set associated file for the IE file is there, also is the set of files associated with the firefox save ! tHAT FILE DOES AT LEAST OPEN PROPERLY WHEN ONLINE WITH fIREFOX (THE IE one also did, in IE). The webpage complete save in Firefox still doesn't work under any circumstances - i.e., it doesn't store any useful information.

To recap on my objective: it is to save my purchase history in a set of files that I can view even after ebay (or ant other provider) remove the relevant webpages from their site.

I have just saved this page and it is perfect.
However, some sites make it really difficult to save a complete webpage.

Post a link to the eBay page let my see what I can do.
Make sure there's no credit card number or other personal info!

I got your message and rest assured, no personal info shows.
I saved the page and it's identical to the original.

Use Firefox and save the page to the Desktop (Web Page, complete). You'll see an internet shortcut and a folder with the same name. Then click the internet shortcut and the page will open in Firefox.

Thank you for looking at that Eldon, but...
when I try that, I have got on my Desktop the folder and and an icon which is a Chrome HTML doc (not it seems to me a shortcut) which opens to end up as the 'second half' of the page (which is irrelevant and I don't actually want). The bit of the page I want, in the format I want, flashes up before replaced by the 'second half'. I did not try it offline as it's not apparently doing what I want nor what you reproduced ???

    I don't use Chrome.
I used Firefox. File > Save Page As... > Web page, complete.
The result is in the zip archive. Unzip it and double-click the Firefox icon.

I don't use Chrome, in Windows. I do have Vivaldi installed which is based on Chromium. When you save a webpage, you get an html file (not a document) and a file folder with the contents of the page.
Click on the html file and a browser opens because that's how html files are displayed. It shows the webpage I opted to save.

You say you get the "second half" of the page. Are you sure you don't need to save 2 pages?

If that doesn't work then I suggest you use the snipping tool and save jpgs of the various parts of the page. A jpg, unlike a pdf will save it exactly as you are viewing it.

    So, Eldon
I downloaded the zip file, I've attached it (the contents) as I see it in windows explorer. Notice the file type
When I try to open in Firefox it appears as if it's opened a text file of the file, but in fact it hasn't finished displaying (oscillating dots visible at top left). In the middle of the file as I scroll down what I see in the browser I find a File not Found error - Firefox can’t find the file at /C:/Users/******/AppData/Local/Temp/Temp1_Test(1).zip/Vintage Sheaffer Imperial Fountain Pen - Brushed Stainless Steel eBay_files/eBayISAPI.htm. (I take it that when you write 'File > Save Page As... > Web page, complete.' you mean by File to clich on the 3 horizontal lines in top right corner of the browser window. I assume that these files are same files I previously saved to my Desktop although they appear a slightly different size. Despite the vast array of 'utility programs' I seem to have collected I can only find 7-zip and this doesn't seem to allow me to extract the files from the zip file: it defaults to explorer to do that

Thank you for your advice pl0dr
    I don't use chrome either (I don't think: I don't really know what's what anymore)
I use only Firefox and IE11 but I have Safari installed as well.
I'm not sure that I don't need to save 2 pages: how would I do that ? There doesn't seem to the option. Indeed it might be better if I could save 2 pages separately because then maybe I could save only the page I was interested in and not save the non-pertinent stuff
I hadn't considered saving jpgs, but that sounds like as much work as saving a framed html page as series of pdf files, with possibly more legible results !

Why don't you just save out the invoices that are emailed to you after every ebay purchase?

fankieh, firstly sellers don't always provide invoices and secondly the invoice may not be correct in every respect, the goods might not as described, the goods might never come, etc., etc.

Eldon (sigh) I'll try one of those, thanks. (I wasn't saying that file type Chrome HTML was necessasrily causing any problems, just that was what I saw, seemed odd to me because I don't have Chrome and it was different to what you saw; on the other hand, it may have been the cause of a problem. I think the info I need is saved but it won't display)

    Don't do that.
Simply click or double-click on the html file and it will open. (It opens your default browser on its own). You have to have both the folder and the html file in the same location for it to work. The file folder contains the other important bits of the page so if you remove it or tamper with anything inside the file folder, it will cause the saved web page not to work.

In Ebay, there is always the option to ask for an invoice but the OP has asked for ways to keep a record of his purchase history, and this is always emailed to you after a purchase. It's titled 'Order Confirmed' and lists all the details of the purchase. Whether it turns up or not is another matter.

Thank you Eldon. The instructions given in this kb article are the same as you specified previously and what first tried in FireFox. So they give the same results: when saving to Desktop I get one one folder and one (Chrome) HTML file, which when opening usinf Firefox (or Safari) intitailly the first and wanted half of the page promisingly flashes up but is replaced permanently by the second half. I had expected the complete webpage to be saved and retrieved. So those instructions in the kb you pointed out in post 13 don't work

plodr, I think I do not have a default browser, and so when I double click on the html (it's actually an .HTM File, IDK if that makes any difference, anyone ?) file my computer opens a window offering me the choice of program which I want to use to open the file - so I have tried IE, FireFox and Safari so with the results reported previously. I have not tampered with the files and I am using the the the two sets of files Firefox saved to my Desktop, in the fashion suggested earlier by Eldon

I have no idea what's happening.
I just (again) saved this thread. There's a folder and HTML file (file extension .htm). Clicking on the latter opens the saved webpage in Firefox exactly as I'm viewing it now.
On the Start menu, click Default Programs > Set your default programs.
Click Firefox > Set this program as default > OK.

Sounds like you have more than one problem then.
Use Thunderbird instead for mail, good program.

If you aren't using Chrome as a browser than the HTML file should not show the chrome icon.

    1. Open default programs and select Associate a file type or protocol with a program.
Be patient because it will take time to populate all the file extensions.
    2. Scroll down until you see htm and html.
Chrome should not be listed there, Firefox should.

Click htm and a box will open. Is Firefox listed there? If so, select it.
    Do the same for html.

Eldon, I did as you said and Firefox saved a folder and a Chrome HTM File (IE also does this). When I click or double click on the Chrome HTM icon, I get a choice of which program to use to open the folder - I have tried all the likely candidates that are offered. A file opens, a neatly laid out and preesnted in the format I expect, but it's missing the top half (I can't say page because that would imply aa page boundary which I vcan't see in the original file). Note I do not want to choose a default program for this action because I am swapping between IE and Firefox depending ion which website I am using). Note that when I save the webpage from IE11 I also get an HTM file and a folder, which opens, but is lacking all information content (only get a properly formatted heading). I am sure the information is there at least in FF because the top of the webpage flashes up before being being replaced by the second half, and because when I open the file as text file, it looks like it's all therte: my computer is just not displaying it all. In IE at least this problem ONLY happens with the "Order Detail" webpage, and not with the listing page which seems more complex to me. It happens with everything I have bought on ebay for a long time now
plodr, I see that htm and html are file type chrome htm types in file extensions, with unknown associated program. I think this correct because I have selected no default browser. I have attached a screenshot (cut). If I change file type for these 2 types of file and repeate the process, on retrieval (opening) the same thing happens except a firefox tab opens automatically, without prompting me to choose which program to use.

EgisCrypto is an encryption tool. Since I've never encrypted anything, I don't feel qualified to give you further advice.
Since things change to chrome and you don't have chrome installed, it probably has to do with that encryption program.

That file type/program just happened to be between html and htm types, there dozens of file types/programs in that view and I don't recognise half of them even. I think Egis software is bundled is bundled on my computer as supplied from HP, I've never used it but can't remove it because I don't know what it does; I've an Egis process running shown in TM. As one of many programs/file types I don't think the issue discussed here has do with that specific one.
Might as well blame the .hta (?) or the .hol (?) file types being associated with Microsoft (R) HTML Application host (?) or Microsoft Outlook as being responsible,or any of a dozen other associations.

How do return to no application association associated with HTML/HTM files ?
