    Hi,
I was using some software that i had transfered from disc to pc then using with run as date.
Thought i new better today & update it but when that failed i noticed the original had been overwritten.
I decided to remove what was installed and just install what was there in use the first time.

My problem is when i run the setup file i am now told You are using the wrong setup file etc etc, clicking ok just shows me the desktop.

Will i need to remove some files etc from the registry as is the disc looks there for whatever reason ?

Please can you help / advise.

    Thanks

Your best option is to see if you can restore a recent system restore point. If you can't then delete the program's folder in Program Files and search in regedit for entries having the program name or part of it and delete them. Take a restore point, or preferably a system image before doing this so you can, if necessary, get back to where you are now.

    Hi,
Just did a restore to last night but when i click the icon i just see a different error message.
    Now looking in registry.

After using regedit you are going to have to reinstall the original version - hope you have the setup file.

  5. theremotedr

Deleted all files of the same name, message ok etc.
    Didnt ask to restart.
I put in the disc but it didnt auto run the setup function.
I have to go into the drive letter myself and double click on setup but same message.

Should the disc not just start the setup on its own ?

forgot to mention,i also have iso etc from when i created them before but not sure what to do with them if that is another angle of attack.

You should always restart the system after deleting entries in regedit. The CD problem is unimportant, just run setup.exe manually.

  8. Earthling

Burn to CD or mount the ISO if you know how.

  9. theremotedr

    theremotedr Master Sergeant

Restarted and tried again but same message.
Using D tools i mounted iso.
I know see icon in where i see c drive etc.
I get the option to open folder / veiew files.
Inside is SET UP application file, this is the same file i try every time as i dont see another ?

    same message

Still trying to sort this but no joy.
For the software in question i found on the pc and saved file of which is zipped.
I double click on it and see many files inside.
I double click on SET UP.EXE and i see a message,
Set up is unable to find _SETUP.DLL which is needed to complete the installation. Error 103

Now looking at the screen about 7 files down from SET UP EXE is SETUP DLL of which its just told me it could not find ?

    Are you using google Chrome.

Error 103 is related to google chrome and anti virus software.

I'm wondering (if there's no typo) this difference in the .dll name has an effect?
Since a Restore Point has been made, and you have the original software disc - I don't see where using GeekUninstaller or Revo Uninstaller to rid the system of any remnants and starting the install over would do any harm.

Sorry I couldn't get back to you yesterday - life got in the way. The files in the zip have all to be extracted to a folder before you can use them. That's why Setup can't see the dll.

    Hi,
Morning,i have extracted the zipped file now & double click on the set up file but i see the message that i am using the wrong set up file.
If i had installed the later version of the disc of which didnt meet my expectations hence removing it,when i try to install this disc would it think that i am trying to install an older version ?
If all the later files were removed then i suppose this older disc wouldnt see that anything else was installed.

Another members post before yours above mentions some software to remove maybe something left over, last night i did look in the registry for all options of the disc name whether it be the full name or partial name, small case then upper case etc etc.
After a while i just seeing no files found so i would be thinking that it was all clean ?

Would a virtual drive etc allow this disc to be installed so it doesnt look for any of these registry keys etc ?

Im looking for any way to get this installed as i use it for work, once done its staying there.

Thanks any advice would get you a large beer

Hi. Dr Moriarty's suggestion is to use a good uninstaller to try to remove all traces of the upgraded version and it might work, might not, but certainly worth a try. Either of the suggested uninstallers is fine though as the program file and most reg entries have already been removed the uninstaller may not be able to find the program to uninstall it. One remedy for that would be to reinstall the upgraded version first and then run the uninstaller but there are no guarantees it will remove every trace, which seems to be what you need.

Before i try that what is your view on virtual pc ?

I use VMWare. Didn't ever use Virtual PC. VMWare is first class. Disappearing now.

  20. theremotedr

    theremotedr Master Sergeant

    OK,
Do you think VMWare will allow me to install the disc, i mean the disc install doesnt look at registry on pc so maybe the wrong disc message is then not seen ?

I have just installed the updated disc now,i will look above and download / install one.
Might be back to see what i then need to do .

    Hi,
I have installed the Revo Uninstaller.
I have double clicked on its icon and now see a screen of icons of item installed on my pc.
At the top under New Programs i do see the item that was just installed.

Now i dont want to do this wrong & need to confirm.
Do i just select the program in question then click on the toolbar one of the options called Forced Uninstall,Uninstall or Quick Uninstall ?

    Please advise thanks.

Dont be confused,i didnt see the video.
I have now watched it & done as advised.

I restarted pc & popped in the disc but same message.

Should i now manually search the registry just in case or please advise.
Thanks for all your help i really need this going.

    Cheers,

Running the program in a virtual machine is a workaround that should work. However you do need first to install an operating system in a VM before you can use it. Do you have the means to do that? or a second computer? Win 10 has Hyper-V which would probably do the job but I haven't tried it yet so cannot advise, though I suspect you are not on Win 10 yet.

    Hmmm
    I am using windows 7

I think i will install it again and this time try Geek Uninstaller just to see if any difference.
    Will report back once done.

    Thanks

Iobit uninstaller works really well. Not only does it remove the content but it scans for the old registry and removes old folders remains.

Good luck with Iobit but if it doesn't do the job I'm looking for the most practical way we can help you get a Windows VM running in which you can install your program. Although MS Virtual PC is no longer supported it is still available for free download and it will install in Win 7. However it does mean you would need to purchase and install Win 7, widely available on auction sites along with product key for less than $30.

If you see this as a way forward you can d/load Virtual PC HERE. You would need to make your own choice about getting Win 7.

    Hi,
Just run Geek Uninstaller, restarted pc then tried the disc on the drive.
Sorry to say but still the same message.

I am now installing again to try the same with iobit.

Should this turn out to be the same how do we proceed from here as i am thinking maybe now after running 2 pieces of software would there be something on the disc that looks at my pc`s date and decides you should be using a later version ?

Just a thought but if so is there anything i can use to maybe look inside a file etc & alter it.

As you can see i am grabbing at straws to get this working.
Two days so far but fingers crossed ive struggled by but need to sort it.

Any suggestions would be taken on board and looked at.

Cheers for you time with this.

I might of used something years ago where maybe upon log in i could run a vm type software and be taken to a new screen where this could be installed.
Maybe it just uses the same registry of which i think will not work.

I have a WIN7 disc but can i use it again on this vm or can it be used only once ?

Is there such thing as a trial vm to see if it works first of all them purchase etc ?

Try uninstalling it through safe mode.Normally if some thing is being stubborn some times uninstalling some thing through safe mode is your best bet. Some stuff Stay stuck in the back round in running in full windows.Windows safe mode eliminates some problems this stuff causes.

You can't legally use it on more than one system though ppl have been known to do so and get away with it ;)

The VM is free, it's Windows you have to pay for.

The route I have suggested will work. If it's important to you then consider it.

  34. theremotedr

    theremotedr Master Sergeant

Iobit gives me the same result as others.
I strongly believe that the issue isn’t left overs in the registry now.

Tomorrow I will try VM as advised.
My comment about when running the set up file does the software look at the current date etc and then cancel the install ?

  35. Earthling

    Earthling Interplanetary Geek

I guess that's a possibility. You could try disconnecting from the net and manually resetting the system date to see if it then works.

  36. theremotedr

    Just an update.
Disconnected from inter, started pc & changed date to various years but still the same.

    I will look at VMWare

If my pc is running win 7 and this software likes win xp should I install win 7 on the virtual drive and then compatibility mode for xp to run the software or should I install xp on the virtual drive.

Which VM have you installed, MS Virtual PC or VMWare? If it's VMWare I can probably help but not if it's Virtual PC. Don't have it or the means to acquire it.

Run Virtual PC, load the WinXP disc, and install Windows like you would on a hard disc.

I have installed virtual pc as mentioned a few posts back.
Think I am a getting on ok as blue screen setting f from my do disc.
Cursor on pc trapped with setup window so writing this from my mobile.

  43. Earthling

    Earthling Interplanetary Geek

OK, good luck with it. I'll keep an eye on this thread and help if I can but with Eldon around too I'm sure you will get your XP up and running.

  44. theremotedr

    theremotedr Master Sergeant

    OK,
    Now installed.
I didn’t get the message when I entered the disc and was allowed to enter a password etc so good.

I am trying to copy files from disc to the v drive as opposed to running it from the disc.
It looks like my 16 speed drive is now more like 1 speed drive. It does not speed up to 16 and get that nice spinning noise.
After a while copying files over just makes the drive crash and go to sleep.

  45. theremotedr

    theremotedr Master Sergeant

    Ok
So I’ve tried copying a different folder and it speeds up like it should.
The drive light is flickering away and half the files have been copied.
The pc shows 7 minutes left but must be wrong as it’s been like that for 5 minutes.

I have no internet access on the v drive even though I selected straight connection etc as opposed to network connection.

If somehow I can get internet I can then upload the files to the cloud then down to the v drive.

Don’t see why no internet is there anyhow ?

I think it's going to be very difficult to answer detailed questions about MS Virtual PC without someone who has it and uses it being willing to help. Somewhere I have a disused old laptop with, I think, Vista on it. If it still runs I'll grab Virtual PC and see what I can do. Might take a while.

  47. theremotedr

    theremotedr Master Sergeant

The fact that I was allowed put enter a number etc is further down the rd than I ever gout of the last days.

When I then click on the icon it then spins the disc and then I see the same message.

So I need to get files uploaded then downloaded again as I need them off these cd as it chucks the message up again.

I’m now stuck again with no internet so I either need to try another Virtual or see if I can get this going.

It might be the same for any Virtual Machine ?

  48. theremotedr

    theremotedr Master Sergeant

Well i was unable to apply any kind of internet for the VM so i deleted it and then installed VM virtualbox.
Same issue were i am unable to apply internet settings.

I have spent most of the day on this i know had to give up.

If i can apply the internet so i can register my xp all will be on the downword slope.

  49. theremotedr

    theremotedr Master Sergeant

02:17 and now just got it working.
Deleting the virtual software that I first installed
and then installing the VM virtualbox was a good move. Easier to use and your mouse pointer isn’t locked inside the virtual screen like the first one.
I experienced the same message like I did in the week but before these messages it worked fine on the virtual drive etc.
Looking in the registry there was only about 10 entries. One of them stood out a mile so I deleted it.
I was then able to use the software but after restart etc I had to delete the same file again. Trying to get all the files from the disc & onto the pc proved a real problem. CHC errors, read only files, crashing, dvd rom drive goes to sleep etc etc. I had an image on the pc from way back so I decided to extracted it, i then deleted the file in the pc registry which took a bit of digging out & then double clicked the exe file.
    BOOM a working gem.
Well this has been a very long week but I wouldn’t of been able to do it without the help of the members who contributed.

    Many thanks all.

As you need this program for your work I'm sure you are relieved. Be sure to grab another image while everything is good. I was battling with this old Vista laptop and not making a lot of progress with setting up a VM so it can go back in its dusty bag now!
