why do sites show my user name
but then my passsword gets entered like *******

no one is standing within 1km of me! just show me wtf I'm tying!

It is for your protection. If you enter it incorrectly, they will tell you that so you can try again.

Because if your password is ********* no one can read it over your shoulder.

how many times do you have someone near you when you enter your password?
why dont they do the ******with the username also?
I know I KNOW!!! BECAUSE IT IS ANNOYING AF

so why do they do it again? to SEEM like they are helping you, but they arent... no, not at all, only giving the illusion of "helping"

    It's help's securing your account.

Just like if you go to a government site like unemployment or any other site.It blocks the view of your password or Social security numbers.Stuff like that is important.Yes it can be annoying. But i would rather be safe entering my password then having some one skimming for user names and password.

    Security is every thing.

Let your browser save your password. Then you don't need to type it.
In Firefox you can then protect all your passwords with a Master password.

I'm pretty sure most browsers have an option to show passwords as you type, if this is really that big a deal for you and you don't care if anyone walking by can see them. I know Chrome does.

I understand it's frustrating. I wouldn't personally bother with it however it can be useful at times.

that seems more risky then just letting me see my password! or giving me the option to see it
I use firefox and most sites I need a password, dont give me an option to see it

then my iphone is all about ****** and in that case I def dont have anyone looking over shoulder!

  11. Eldon

    Eldon Major Geek Extraordinaire

    OK.
    But the above isn't risky?

  12. Jerry78

    Jerry78 Private First Class

I'm not sure why that would be risky?
    At work
no one has access to my computer..I keep my laptop in a locked drawer, if you open the drawer, 2 passwords needed to log into my computer...
    at home,
i keep my usernames/passwords in a Word document which is saved on an external drive and no one ever comes over (to steal it) ca use I dont shower or vacuum;)

I dont understand an autofill progoram isnt risky? I dont keep my nudes on the cloud, does an autofill program store passwords on the computer? ( I guess so)
but like auto-payments, I like to know what's going on, I already dont know my top 5 most called numbers because of voice dialing,.... so when I lose my phone, I cant use another phone cause I dont know who to calll
    111-1111
    111-1112
    111-1113......:(

    In another thread you posted...
    Drafts are not encrypted.
    That's a security risk. ;)

  14. Jerry78

I'm not sure what that means? so someone can see the drafts of my email account without logging into my email account?

I only save the old and new passwords in my work email draft folder, which I calll, "Passwords"
seeing the password to the programs I use wouldnt help them unless they got access to the programs I use

at home I use word to save my passwords/usernames in a spread sheet format

and my internet is not plugged into the computer when I'm not using it, both at work and at home.

    Wife's birth month,
    daughter's day, son's year.
    But not in reverse.

    my email?
so someone would get into my email account and read my emails ?even if the email program is closed?

If they have previously gained your email credentials through whatever means (malware, social engineering etc) then yes!

If they can log in, it wont matter if your program is closed locally.

If you changed your password to a secure setting, then thats all you should need.
Your creds are based solely on the pass you set.

If no one else knows it, then you should be ok.

Are you still having issues after the reset?

    gotcha!
this place makes sense out of things that are beyond me

    example(about passwords)
I use CCcleaner like once a week or so
I log in to pay bills to Bank of america,
    lowes dept store.
    chase credit card

I get messages from the last 2 that "THISDEVICE IS NOT RECONGIAZED< WE NEED TO SEND YOU A TEXT TO CONFIRM YOUR IDENTIY"

    something close to that

then they send me a text and i get a number which i add in to my username and password
Bank of america only cares i have a username and password

what they FK is up with this?
I know CCcleaner deletes all the stuff in my RAM or cache or whatever, but why do these big name instutions need more than a username and password

    I dont get it?

    CCleaner deletes cookies.
Open CCleaner > Options > Cookies and select those from frequently visited websites you want to keep.

thanks for how to avoid that issue, but WHY Do they do that?>
    isnt my password/username enough?
apparently not, as I am asking a question that has no answer

That question has no answer here - you should be asking on those websites where it's occurring if you want to get to the bottom of the issue.

It's Two Factor Authentication and you should set it up on your BOA account too. Not only would criminals need your username and password, they would also need your phone for the code in the text message to get control of those accounts. It makes it a bit more difficult for thieves to steal your money.

  28. Jerry78

    Jerry78 Private First Class

thanks for the advice, I"ll actually do that since you seem to know what you are saying
but how would they steal my money?
im asking for me and the others in my family, we all have a linked accounts......

  29. Just Playin

    Just Playin MajorGeek

They would use your username and password to transfer money, the same as you do.

I will second that.....as JP states, Its a very important factor in authenticating you as the real account owner.
Its almost mandatory in today's cloud network environment (Internet) where online security is critical in protecting not only your data, but your other assets.

Yes, configure CCleaner to avoid any cookie deletion if you wish to bypass this event, however most sites (if secure) will only allow 30 days or so as recognition from a single device before you must re-enter 2 factor (ie MG's)

This is good and should not be seen as a hassle.........when it comes to financial transactions online, don't be lazy is my advice!

    Thx guys
Im gonna add the extra step to Bank of america accounts/ duh. Its my money

As for the other accounts asking for more verification, i dont get it

I am paying bills, there is no money available
If someone logged onto my lowes Account, I dunno how theyd profit?
Change my address? Get a new card sent there? Go to lowes buy stuff?
So the protection is for them, not me

    Thanks guy

No - still for your protection...

Scenario: Your Lowes account gets hacked and the hacker decides to upgrade his kitchen with new appliances. He fills out an online order for pickup and uses the same card number that you have on your charge history. Gotcha!!!

You have a lot of personal information available on your account page that can be leveraged into things like identity theft. Then it becomes your problem.

    yeah, well,,,,life lock sucks a**!!
at any rate, I watch my credit reports/ ala credit karma(so no other credit is given without me doing it
and i froze my credit report(might need to look into how to unfreeeze, or does "thaw" after a certain time?

    and more importantly

now i understand the reason for the double/triple IDenty questions and I've made sure the boA has the 2 step verifciation
    so all is well
thanks for the help in understanding guys!
