Graphics Card Install: Where To Fix Power Connectors

    Hello,

I have a new graphics card that I'm trying to install and have already uninstalled the old drivers. I know how to fit the card in the sockets at the back but the power connectors that I received with the card confuse the hell out of me. The 6-pin clearly fits into the card but I have two more white connectors that don't seem to fit anywhere. Although I checked online about compatibility, I certainly didn't come across this problem and my old graphics card has no such connectors. I can't see a socket that matches on my power supply or motherboard. Have I bought something I can't use?

    My specifications are as follows:

Dell Inspiron 580 with an Intel i5-760 2.8 Ghz processor running Windows 10 and with 12 GB RAM (I think it's DDR3)

My old graphics card is an AMD Radeon HD 5450 1024MB and I'm trying to fit an NVIDIA Geforce GTX 1050 Ti 4GB.

I can try taking a photo of what I'm looking at under the hood if that helps?

Thank you for any help you can offer.

Some video card power connectors range between 4 and 6 pins.

The video card you are referring to only takes a +6 pin connection. So there is no need to have the 2 extra pins.Just leave them hanging.

There are very few video cards that i know of that takes an +8 pin connection. Most of them only go by 2s 4 and 6.

I was trying to do some thing else when i hit the post button.

    Thank you wile e coyote!

Just to be sure, could someone else confirm this? It's not that I don't trust wile (although he does like to drop bombs on poor roadrunners!). It's just that I'm paranoid about my PC going KABOOM! As far as I can tell, the Inspiron 580 only has a 300w power supply.

Just in case anyone else has such a question, I researched this and it seems clear that wile e coyote is absolutely correct so I'm going to give it a go. Please do feel free to comment, however. Messing with my PC makes me extremely nervous!

This link seems to suggest that I need a minimum of 300w in my PSU (which I think I have) whereas this link has several people commenting that the card does not need the additional connectors at all. Still paranoid though.

Okay, now I'm desperately worried. After swapping out the graphics cards, I turn on the PC and hear 6 beeps followed by a pause and another 6 beeps etc. Totally baffled and anxious now....help, please!

Video card failure for you.Take a picture and show us what setup you have in the case.

I just reinstalled a new mother board. And a new video card that does not need a Pin connector. And it draws 300 watts.

Video card failure (DoA's do happen), or the motherboard/PSU failing to supply the 65-75W required to power the card? Maybe a bad contact in the PCIe slot - debris - or a bad cable/connection, or a PSU that's not up to the task (any more - it's ~8 years old)?

The card needs testing in another PC, preferably one with a good quality PSU.

As for the video card without a pin connector that draws 300 watts - that's badly written and could be confusing - it might require a 300W PSU if it's already powering a 100W+ CPU and a number of drives/other components but an average low spec build plus 'basic' 65W GPU might get by with a 200/250W PSU and draw less than 150W.

That's just what i was thinking.

Maybe the power supply unite is not enough to run that type of video card the op is running. It roughly takes around 425 watts for my system to run.

    Thanks, guys.

The card itself is a refurb, one of those that I thought came from a seller in this country but turned out to be another disguised Chinese vendor. When I found this out, I had a facepalm moment because I'd generally avoid those sellers. I haven't given feedback yet and certainly don't want to finalise everything until I know it either works or it doesn't.

I can now confirm that my PSU does indeed max out at 300 watts and that I've had my PC for possibly as long as ten years and I've not replaced the PSU.

I am just about to switch the graphics cards back over so I guess we'll see if it's the PCIe slot. Before I do so, I'll see if it has been badly put into place and try another reboot if so. Otherwise, I'll reboot with the old card and I'm pretty sure (hoping desperately) that that won't be the issue.

So do you think the next step is to either find a decent PC to try it on or get a better PSU? If it's the former, I don't think I have any options at all unless I ask someone in a PC shop to try it out? If it's the latter, do you know what to advise (or where to get the advice) on what is compatible and where might offer a good price? Of course, I'm loathe to splash the cash on a PSU if the card isn't going to work anyway but do I have any other option?

In the meantime, here's a (rather bad) shot of my set-up with the old card in place. received_250919095618439.jpeg

I'd be scouting out someone local who you could get to test the GPU first, try the PC shop otherwise, they should be willing to help out.

Be careful of them PC repair shops. Some can rip you off.

Just what ever you do don't take it to a BEST buy Geek squad.
