I have an android 5.1 device that makes a frequent popping noise when I am listening to You Tube. My initial reaction was to think that it was caused by the earbuds being cheap/ old/ dropped too many times. But, upon further research that seems to not be the case.

-I tried multiple You Tube videos and I had the same experience with each.
-I changed the settings to different base/ treble levels but the problem remained (there are 5 different settings available)
-I plugged the earbuds into another device and there was no problems on the other device. The other device was Android 4.4.4. One thing about the 4.4.4 version, is that it doesn't have the "audio effects" setting where I can change the base and treble to the 5 different levels. It doesn't seem to have any option at all for changing the base and treble.

My oldest android device is running 5.0. (my other devices run 6 and 7).
I don't have base/treble settings. I have only degrees of volume.
I listened using 4 different things: YouTube app, Chrome browser, Firefox browser and Samsung browser.

In Firefox (the worst browser to use), every time some sort of "ad" came up, like Subscribe to YouTube, I'd get the pop. The Samsung browser also had the pop once as Subscribe to YouTube came on top of the video. Perhaps I didn't play the other videos long enough but I did not get the subscribe to YouTube in the YouTube app and the chrome browser.

Correction to the above: it was not the Samsung browser. This is an ASUS tablet and the browser is the android browser that came on the device. browser.jpg

Is the popping sound still present when you turn off the audio effects?

I think you do have the base & treble settings. Try this.
settings -> sound & notifications -> audio effects (which is the first option on the list).

The issue that I mentioned in the OP seems to have gone away. I am not sure how/why the problem got solved. the only thing that I can guess is maybe I rebooted the device.

In my device, I can't switch that to "none." If you look at the top of the page that you are referring to, there is a tab for speaker. When I switch to the speaker tab, there is no such option. I believe the option is only for the built in speakers that are on the phone.

    You'd lose that bet.

The only thing missing from the screenshot was the last item
Notification access and under it Apps cannot read notifications.

Just out of curiosity, I fired up my two newer devices, both Samsung's. One runs android 6 and the other android 7. They both do have wheels for selecting different base and treble settings.

I wonder if those settings appeared in android 5.1 (remember I'm running 5.0) because you don't have it in 4.4.4 and I don't have it in 5.0.

    FWIW
My smartphone has Android 5.0 and there are no bass and treble settings.

Thanks Eldon for checking. So perhaps it was a feature in 5.1 which neither of us runs.

Bass and treble settings are worthless on a mobile phone. The tiny speaker(s) cannot cope with low frequency sounds.
And yet, some Android media players do have equalizers.

Yes, unless there is some setting that you can turn on and off which then makes the base and treble available. For example, I was thinking that developer mode might have something to do with it but I'm probably wrong about that.

It could be useful if you want to plug the phone into some real speakers. Now that you mention it, I think I will try that for when I am washing dishes (I can't hear well through the ear buds when the water is running). It's convenient to have the controls on the phone nearby vs blue tooth speakers controlled by a device in a different room.
