How do I Convert .avi to MPEG4. My dash cam stores files in .avi format. I can't open them with anything I have tried to no avail. Is there a way to convert them?

If I reformat the card to another sorce will it still work in my dash cam?

    Thanks,

    .avi is a container format.
The video and audio streams can be almost any formats.
Which media players have you tried?

    We need to know a little more;
What type of computer are you using and what Operating System are you using?
It seems that making a copy of the file and paste it somewhere might be an answer...

    Sorry its a web cam.
    sorry

Hi Eldon "been a while" and Stephen_c16.

    I have tried:
    Infran View
    Movie Maker
    PhotoGallery
    Windows Media Player and Center

I am running Win 7 Sp1 64 bit on and ASUS machine. Where are you thinking of pasting it?

Let's look at what video & audio formats the dash cam uses for the .avi files.
Download MediaInfo - the first link.
    https://mediaarea.net/en/MediaInfo/Download/Windows

Open one of the .avi files with MediaInfo.
    Under View, select Basic.
Post what you see under Container and general information.

    Hi Eldon,

I tried everyway I know how to get this program to open to no avail. I tried Run, Save and Save As and can not get the file to run. When hitting Run I get a notice it is running but it doesn't show up any place on my machine?

    Hi,

I am unable to download a full video with the free version, they give you a 3 minute shot of the video, this does not help me as the videos in question could be up to or beyond an hour each. The only free ones I see are Torrent options which I will not use.

    Thanks for trying though...

    Hi Everyone,

I used an older (2015) version of WinX HD Video Converter Deluxe I had purchased and it did the trick of me. Except the only 2 of 22 videos I would not even show up on the conversion. I tried just clicking those two folders and nothing shows up in the convert to even choose them. :(

Looks like I am dead in the water to get these two folders back.

A big thank you to everyone that tried so hard to help me with this issue...

Right-click the video file and click MediaInfo.

Mr. Magoo, click on Open With. You might see Windows Media Player first. Select Choose default, then you get to pick what program you want to use.

From time to time Windows seems to change my choices so if for something it opens with a program I don't want. I close the file out, go back to the Open With option, select Choose default, and make my choice of preferred program.

Thanks for the better link. The only problem I have is that it does not create a desktop icon and when I try to open it from my program files I get a list which has several .exe files and I have no idea which one(s) to click...

Just double click one if you have multiple downloads of the same file.Just keep one and delete the rest.

You might have to right click and then click on click on administrator rights.Windows 10 is weird.

Did you save it as a Desktop icon.It should allow you to save it as a desktop icon.It should give you the option to do so.

Edit if not...It should be in your download folder.

CCCP when installed is automatic.Just double click on a video and make sure you play it in windows media player.

some formats will ask you a question. In a Gray box all you need to do is say yes to play.

I just deleted the two files that I needed as they where corrupt. I wouldn't mind having this program in my Toolbox though?...

The usual way is right-click the intended application > Send to > Desktop ( create shortcut).

So essentially you are not able to download anything based on not being able to download
    Code:
    https://mediaarea.net/en/MediaInfo/Download/Windows
    Code:
    https://www.pcsteps.com/13965-codec-pack-play-video-formats/
    Code:
    https://www.top-windows-tutorials.com/combined-community-codec-pack/
    Is that correct?

If so, something is wrong with your Win 7 computer.

    Thanks guys(?),

I will look into this when I get some time to do it properly. Seeing as the files I needed were corrupted and gone I don't want to waste any more of your time with this subject. I will however be doing the test you suggested in the near future just to be sure Bear ll is nice and clean as I believe he is. :)

Wondershare is an awesome piece of software for projects like this... and unless it was just for a limited time, certain components of the Suite are available as freeware. The Ultimate version is an exceptional program, though... in my opinion.

    Thanks Trex,

I looks like a good piece of software but to rich for my blood for the amount of use it would get. Thank you for the suggestion though...

    Hi Eldon,

Thanks for the tip, but... When going to download it they are forcing me to install Yaboo! Search, I am not a particular fan of Yaboo, so I canceled the install. I imagine I can delete it from my programs but just don't like to be forced to install software I have no interest in...

Note: When installing Format Factory, watch out for the bundled toolbar. It is installed by default if you don't uncheck the box on the first screen of the installer package.

You don't blindly click everything. Installing FREE software either requires you to choose custom install, if available or READ every screen and uncheck/untick items.

Indeed, that is why I didn't open/run the software. The way they already had it checked is what disturbed me, I never gave it a thought to just unclick as normally the won't let you download. I just did as you suggested and unclicked it and the download worked as expected. Looks like a very nice software thanks Eldon and plodr for hooking me up with this program, it is a keeper for my Toolbox...

Yes, lots of programs come with the junk selected. You can always uncheck/untick it. If it doesn't remove the check/tick, which I haven't come across yet, then I would not install the program and I'd be sure to post warnings on the several forums I look in on to avoid the program.
