I just bought this computer: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod...LLC-_-na-_-na-_-na&item=9SIA7RB6V45759&cm_sp=

I would like to update the bios since I see that the bios version is 2012, which I am guessing is the original bios. I don't think there is much of a downside to updating the bios since I can probably just return the computer if something goes wrong.

Also, the computer came with Windows 10 Pro and I see from the sticker on the computer that the computer originally had Windows 7 Pro. But, I want to use Windows 8.1. Are there pretty good chances that it will work fine on Windows 8.1?

It seems like the computer has the Windows 10 pro installed on it but it's not activated. It seems like I have to manually put in the product key (from the sticker on the computer).

I want to install a new hard drive, too. I want to ditch the HDD that's in there and put in an SSD. I am ready to do this right away.

In what order should I handle these tasks?

I would not flash the bios unless there is a specific upgrade requirement (ie better USB3, etc) or the current bios has some sort of issue.

Personally, I would just remove the existing HDD (without activating Windows 10), install your SSD and install Windows 8.1. There should be no HW / driver issues especially if Win7 was installed previously on this box.

Once you have everything up and running you can establish if the bios may need flashing.

If some some reason it all goes pear shaped, just replace the original HDD and sent it back.

    Good Luck

If something goes wrong during a BIOS update the computer will be rendered permanently unbootable. As has been said, only update BIOS when there is a real need to do so. As for installing 8.1 it is already out of mainstream support and extended support ends in Jan 2023. Stay with Win 10 - the present problems will soon be history.
