Why Do I Have No Sound?

I am getting no sound out of the speakers attached to my PC. I have checked that everything is connected properly, and it is. The speakers are switched on, of course. Even the light on the speakers to say they are on is lit up. According to Device Manager sound is working properly (cf. attached image). So, I am out of potential problems, and more to the point, solutions to the problem. What may be wrong? How do I go about fixing it?

Try testing your speakers through another device like your cell phone to see if they are working.

Do you have HDMI hooked up???

If you got a HDMI monitor setup going. And not VGA this could be another problem.

If you have a HDMI monitor but a monitor with out speakers this could all so the cause for no sound.Reason being your Volume Mixer selected your HDMI speakers instead of regular speakers.I get this all the time.

Here are some pictures as an example below.

Here is this picture on my windows 7 in my Volume mixer. My Computer Screen is selected and now i have no sound.

My Computer screen does not have speakers installed on it.So to fix this select the arrow icon below the screen. There will be a secondary menu pop up. 1127181145.jpg
Select Speakers at the bottom of the list.

This happens some times when a new driver is installed.Things are set to default.

The obvious question is whether you have accidentally muted the sound? This could happen by pressing an F key that has a speaker on it with a diagonal line through it or by clicking the speaker icon in the notification area - does it have an x against it? As you are not new to computers this is not likely to be the cause but we always need to check basics first. (You don't have to confess if this was the cause ;) )

Same problem here with a 15+ year old Gateway. First went with PCI sound card, now using Bluetooth via USB connection. Just need to set the default sound device through Control Panel/Sound.

Thank you for everyone's feedback and responses. I am afraid it is going to be one of life's mysteries. I have tried no solutions as of yet due to lack of time. I came in tonight and decided to do some language practice, switched everything on and forgot the speakers were even broken. It was only when my partner asked how did I fix them I remembered they were not working. Well now they are and I have no idea why.

My speakers are still working, i.e. producing sound. However, it sounds like it's coming from the back of a cave and I'm at the cave's mouth. Are my speakers, I think the technical is, "buggered". Alternatively, are there things I can try?

I’ve installed Driver Booster and ran a scan and updated the driver. For now (fingers crossed) my speakers are working normally.

Can you hear if you plug in your headphones?

I would like to ask you to please clarify what you are asking. I can plug my headphones into one of my speakers. Is that what you mean? However, I've not checked whether that's OK because now the speakers are fine I'd no reason to doubt the headphones wouldn't work.

If you mean plugging the headphones directly into the PC itself, I don't think you can. If that's what you mean I'll have to double check if that's possible when I get home from work.
