    Hi,

Just purchased new cartridges for ~3 yr old and mostly unused Epson xp200 printer.

Cleaned, dusted, Replaced all cartridges & performed maintenance through Windows 10 Asus laptop.

Issue no.1 : Couldn't print in Black ink.

Issue no.2: All of the ink levels in epson indicator s/w showed high usage of relatively all the inks just after printing around 10 pages.

    Tried manually checking all cartridges.

Tried restart of laptop as well as printer several times.

Tried s/w update and reinstall for printer.

Can't find a reset button for printer. Any advise for flashing indicator or other option?

    Please Help!

Are the new cartridges genuine Epson ink cartridges?

You didn't say which light is flashing. Did you check your manual? It says on page 136,
Don't know what you mean by "reset" button. Not sure I have ever seen one on a printer. Typically all you have to do is unplug power to the printer, wait 30 - 60 seconds then plug it back in.

If you mean a factory reset, your manual does not show that and not sure I have ever seen that in a printer either.

My fear is when the printer sat mostly unused for ~3 years, the ink remaining in the print heads may have dried up. This is why it is often recommended to print something, like a test page, at least once a week. Check your manual again, starting on page 119 for Print Head Maintenance and Cleaning.

I have the Epson XP-225--Usually flashing light indicates low, or, empty cartridge. Always shake black cartridges gently downwards, before taking of tape, and fitting (not colour ones)

Why? That makes no sense to me. Color ink can "settle" and/or separate too. I always gently "rock and roll" my ink (and toner) cartridges in all directions before insertion and at first notice of low levels. All of these inks are mixtures of ingredients. Even yellow is a mixture even though yellow is a "primary" color (cyan and magenta clearly are not).

I say "gently rock and roll" because if you "shake" an ink or toner cartridge too hard, ink can go flying everywhere if the tape is loose or removed, or spill out when you remove the tape.

    I hate nit-picking
Having the same series as Vgama, I know for a fact that the instructions I had said to do as I said- and specifically -NOT the coloured cartridges.
    Other printers may suggest differently.
If the tape was loose, I would suggest that was a faulty cartridge - and I did say before removing tape. Has worked for me for the last few years.
I am sure anyone who had one with loose tape would have sense enough not to shake it- in any direction.
I hold the cartridge , by the sides, not touching the connection end, and I , quite firmly make a downwards 'shake', as if going to drop it, 3, or, 4 times, and it is a no brainer.
I just hope Vgama sorted it out, no need to concern themselves about our last posts.

It's not being nit-picking when talking about factually correct "technical" details. And when giving advice to advice seekers, clients and friends, it is important to ensure they are getting the true facts, and not myths, rumors, or inaccuracies.

I have never seen this advice - hence my reason to ask, "why?"

I have also never used that specific Epson but have several other Epsons, Brother, Canon and HP printing devices. And I never saw those instructions before. I just reviewed the manual for my HP and Brother printers. Neither mention shaking any cartridge. So I found and looked at the manual for that Epson XP-225 and sure enough, it specifically says to shake the black, and to remove the color cartridges from their package "without shaking".

So you are right - at least for that printer. But I still wonder why not the color cartridges. ???

From the User's Guide for Epson XP200 page 111 (link I posted in #3 downloads this)
This one doesn't specify black or color. It just says to shake the new cartridge pack.

Yeah, that make sense to me. But clearly, not all Epsons are alike. And in this case, baklogic correctly referenced the OP's specific Epson.

No baklogic referenced XP225 model. The OP posted XP200 and I posted the page in the manual for the OP's model, not a 225.

Doh! Right you are, plodr. Not sure how I missed that but thanks for keeping me straight.

OP hasn't posted again so I'm not sure if he spied what to do.

I assume that if you wrap the cart up you can shake it in case you didn't know you were supposed to.
That was the first time I ever saw to shake a cart before you installed it. I've never done it BUT yesterday I had to install an aftermarket cart in out old HP 722C! I don't know how old the printer is but it has to be older than 14 years. I decided to shake the cart in the box before I installed it because the replacement was sitting in a drawer for a few years. I installed the cart, did 2 prints which turned out crisp and dark so my husband was all set to print name labels from a database that go out early in 2019.

I don't like the word "shake" in this context. When I think of shake, I think of the action of shaking a can of spray paint - which is almost a violent action. You don't want the ink to come flying out of the cartridges. So I just gently rock the cartridges back and forth, and forward and back a few times.
