Computer Freezing After Reinstalling Apps

I have Windows 10 Version 1803 (OS Build 17134.345).

A few days ago, I uninstalled XBox because I don't play games, except for Solitaire. I didn't know that they were associated. When I tried to play Solitaire, I got a message that said that the game isn't in my computer. I did a System Restore but it didn't bring Solitaire/XBox. I then Googled how to get it back and found and did this:

Now my computer freezes every 15 minutes or so and sometimes it reboots. I did a chddsk to make sure my C drive is okay and it is.

Is there anything I can do to fix this?

I ran System File Checker. After it was 100% complete, the DOS box closed. No log file opened so I ran it again but again, there was no log file.

 

The log file is on the Desktop.
It's sfclogs.txt.

 

It's not on my desktop and I did a search of my entire computer for sfclogs and nothing came up. "No items match your search."

Edit: I did a search of my computer for sfc and the only things that came up was the program and some .dll files.

 

Oftentimes, when I search for help for Windows 10, the help is for a different version of Windows 10 and my version doesn't have the same options as outlined in the help section. I have Windows 10 Version 1803 (OS Build 17134.345). Maybe that's the reason a log file wasn't created.

 

Hi Denise, did you run the sfc utility that Eldon linked you to or did you run sfc from a command prompt because you already knew how to do it? If the latter then try the former.

 

I downloaded sfc from the link that Eldon gave me and saved it to my desktop and then double-clicked on it. It ran with no problems. It just didn't create a log file.

 

Something is not right.
The batch file doesn't really create a log file - it filters the CBS.log file and only saves the System File Checker results in a new log file.
Do you have a CBS.log file? It should be in this folder.
C:\Windows\Logs\CBS

 

C:\Windows\Logs\CBS has a CBS .txt document in it but it's 1.11Mb and I can't attach it because it's too big. I tried copying and pasting it here. I waited about 5 minutes and it never showed up. I can try copying and pasting it in sections, if you'd like. Let me know. Here's a tiny portion of it. Is it what you want to see?

The CBS.txt is humongous. All I copied was about 1/100th of the scrollbar. Maybe someone has an email address that I can attach the file to but it'll be like reading a book.

 

I just ran the sfc utility on a Win 10 version 1809 computer and it finished normally by producing the report, so it doesn't appear to be a Win 10 problem. I suggest you run sfc the old fashioned way by opening a command prompt 'As Administrator' and typing sfc /scannow. Then, hopefully, we would get the normal report at the end of the run that tells us whether problems were found and whether they were successfully fixed or not.

(note the space between sfc and /scannow)

 

I just ran sfc /scannow. No .txt report was generated but the DOS box says "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations."

 

That's good.

I have file extensions showing and it's CBS.log, not CBS.txt as I posted.

 

It's extension is .log. It opens with Notepad so until I enabled viewing of extensions, I thought it was .txt.

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth
Press enter.
Make a note of the results and post it.

I didn't realize it was still running. After about 1/2 hour, it then said "No component store corruption detected."

 

Again, that's good.
But, I think your only option is to a Non-destructive reinstall of Windows.

Work through this keeping in mind what you have already done.

I know you have already tried a system restore but do you have any previous restore points? Even one that took you back to 1709 or earlier would be preferable to trying to repair it.

No user should ever find themselves in this situation when system imaging programs are free and so capable.

 

Yeah, I thought that might be the only answer. Last night, Windows started an update. It took about 4 hours and just when it was 91% installed, my computer crashed. Today, my computer was creeping along for a few hours. Now it's back up to speed. In my list of updates, the update is listed as "failed to install." Is it half sitting in my pc? Thanks for the link for the non-destructive reinstall. If I decide to do it, I'm sure I'll have questions. I'll definitely be waiting until after Christmas. I'm going to be moving on the 26th and won't get back to this for at least a week.

The restore point that was created when I did the system restore is the oldest one available. The Windows disk I bought is version 1803 so version 1709 is out of the question. To tell you the truth, I wish I had stuck with XP x64 and just bought a laptop with Windows 10 for the internet. It would've been cheaper and easier.

You will probably end up doing a clean install, it's free and certain to fix your issues. But in the meantime have a good Xmas and forget all about it.
