Hi, i just got a new (used) Lenovo laptop that was stated to be in top condition, with Win7 Home Premium, but it's slow, and approx. 46gb is free out of 74gb, which means there's probably alot of unknown extraneous stuff on here.

And now i tried a YouTube video, and find the external speakers not working, unlike my other Lenovo laptop (since this same external-speaker works with my other Lenovo.

Just now i tried this, but it failed to get my external speakers to work:
    1. right clicked "Computer", & clicked "Properties",
    2. Clicked "Advanced System Settings"
    3. On the "Hardware" tab
    4. Clicked device installation settings
    5. Clicked "no, let me choose what to do"
    6. Never install driver software from Update
If anyone has a good resolution, i'd appreciate it, thanks!

Right-click the Volume icon in the Notification Area.
    Click Playback devices.
    What do you see?

Hi, first let me paste another strategy i just tried (as seen on YouTube), and then i plan on pasting a pic of my Playback Devices.

The result (upon re-start) was that it stated:
SoundMax audio driver did not load.
    You may need to reinstall.

Now here's the YT strategy tried:

To Fix Sound Problem in Windows 7 , please try these two simple methods:
Method 1 : Please go to Control Panel and open ‘Device Manager’ – Locate “Sound, Video and Game Controller’ – Right click on your device’s sound card and click on ‘Update driver software…” – install the updates if available – if not, please right click on your sound card and then click ‘Uninstall’ – close all windows and restart your computer – After restart, Windows will automatically install the uninstalled drivers. And now check the sound. If this didn’t work, please try this second method:
Method 2: Click on start menu – search for ‘Services’ – Open ‘Services’ and locate ‘ Windows Audio’ – right click on it and open ‘Properties’ – click on fourth tab ‘Dependencies’ and please note down the three services written there. And now, locate those three services in the list of services and right click each and select ‘Start’ if they are not started already. Now, double click on ‘Windows Audio’ service – change startup type to ‘Automatic’ and click ‘Start’ – ‘Apply’ – ‘OK’. Troubleshooting hardware when it's not in front of one is always challenging.
    1. Did you check the Volume?
    2. The two Services that must be set to Automatic are Windows Audio and Windows Audio Endpoint Builder.
    3. Open Device Manager and expand Audio, video and game controllers. Double-click the audio device. What do you see?

No it doesn't. That means only 28GB is being used. That's not a lot.

Check the obvious too - most notebooks have a quick mute button. On my Toshiba, it up next to the power button above the Fn keys.

Yes, i know about the obvious - in my case above the function keys on upper left of my Lenovo.
Yes, i had thinkered with them, and it failed to help.
    BTW, there's 3gb RAM on this R61, Win-7 Home-Premium.

FWIW, the same thing happened to me when i had tried out a T60 with these same speakers.
But somehow i had gotten it to work, by trying various cryptic instructions i read online.
I forget what they were, but it eventually worked. If only i had a photographic memory... o_O

    Any other ideas?

P.S. I still have "Creative" brand CD from those days. But i don't remember if it's associated with my Creative-brand Speakers or with a Creative-Zen-Player i'd bought at the same time.

If it's the former, might that get the Speakers working?
They're heavy/solid speakers, practically identical-features to the vintage Bose speakers of that era.

    GUESS WHAT - PROBLEM SOLVED.
What happened was, that when i'd previously been tinkering, such as with the overhead buttons near ESC button, as well as with the red/blue ports (which i always mix up) - nothing worked.

But i never tried tinkering with the red/blue ports after having tried my strategies above (in post #1 and #3) as well as having rebooted today.

So i'm not quite sure which sequence did the trick, but now my speakers are operational, albeit i'm not sure their max volume is as high as previously. Perhaps its my imagination.
