What Kind Of Cable Do I Need?

I just moved and my cable modem is different with a different connector than I used to have. The only connector on the modem is a telephone jack so I think I need a cable that has USB on one end to connect to my computer and a telephone connector on the other end to connect to the modem. I'm on a notepad right now that's difficult to navigate on line. Can someone give me a link to a cable like this? Also, does anyone know if this type of connection is DSL? I thought I had ordered cable connection for my computer.

Yeah, it sounds like DSL instead of cable. Cable modems use a F-Type coaxial connection from the Internet provider. DSL modems use a phone type.

There has to be more than one - one on the Internet side to connect you to your ISP. And at least one on your side to connect to your computer or to a separate router. And on your side of the modem (cable or DSL), it will still be a regular Ethernet cable, same as would connect to your computer.

You might have an integrated "residential gateway" device which would be the modem, a router and a 4-port Ethernet switch in the one box. It might also have a WAP (wireless access point) to add wireless networking. It may even have another phone connection to add Internet phone (VoIP) capability.

Beyond that, we probably should have some model numbers so we know exactly what we are talking about.

The bottom of the modem says
    XFSEYUP-99ED
    harbor8495brace
    PN CGM4140COM

I didn't want DSL. It was supposed to be a cable connection. It's 4:30 now. I'm going to see if I can catch them before they close.

Thanks for responding. I'll let you know what happens.

Not sure what to say. My searches got nothing for XFSEYUP-99ED or harbor8495brace. So I don't know what you have. ???

I just checked my account on line. It says that I have a CHM4140COM. I was able to speak with someone at Comcast too. They're going to send a tech out tomorrow at noon. I asked them to make sure that he has the cable I need. She said that he would. I also asked if I have DSL or cable. She told me that I have cable 200kb/sec, and that they no longer do DSL. You mentioned that I need two cables. I couldn't find a second cable that I used before but I'm planning on physically standing in the doorway until he gets me on line. I hope that strategy works :eek:/

Edit: I checked out the cable that you gave me a link for and that wasn't the type of cable that was connected before. Unfortunately, I unplugged everything so quickly, I didn't pay attention to exactly was kind of cable connected my pc to the modem but this modem is completely different, anyway.

Since you moved to a new place i would have them check the lines and every thing. You never know how hold they are.

After much digging through unpacked boxes, I found a cable that would connect a phone to a wall jack. I connected it to one of the ports in my pc and the modem but I still can't connect to the internet. I can't figure out what else it needs. Any ideas?

Yes, that's my modem. I made a typo in the spelling originally. It's the 4140COM. There are 4ports in the rear of it. He connected a cable to one of the top ports and told me to connect a cable to one of the lower ports and the other end to a USB port on my pc. I never had it hooked up that way before and I didn't know if cables were made that way. Unfortunately, the way I had it connected to the internet where I used to live isn't working with this modem.

The cable man just left. He said that I needed an Ethernet cable, not a telephone cable. He had one in his truck, popped in both ends and I have internet again! WOO_HOO!

Thanks for being there for me and trying to help. It meant a lot.

    HAVE A HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Great. I was just going to say you don't use phone cables with Cable modems. Glad you got it going and thanks for the followup.
