I have my Windows 10 computer set to auto update which happened last night.

Now, the onscreen keyboard is not working properly and keyboard icon in missing from the task-bar. I can only launch it from the "settings screen" When I minimize the keyboard it disappears completely and I must relaunch it from "settings."

I tried System Restore which didn't help.

So you are saying that you used system restore point to restore to a point before the Windows update happened? If so, wouldn't Windows just install its updates again (and thus, the problem would recur)?

Also, Windows is not letting you put the on screen keyboard back in the taskbar?

You are correct. I must go to 'settings' to activate the CORRECT keyboard. There is a keyboard in the taskbar that opens a large, simple keyboard that I've never seen or used before.

Don it's essential to tell us at least what operating system you are using. Win 10 is very different from Win 7.

I identified the OS in the topic title. Anyway, it's Windows 10 Home Version.

I seem to recall dragging the Onscreen Keyboard icon down to the taskbar but I can't find a dragable button anywhere.

    Aaah! Apologies Don

I don't normally use the OSK but calling it now it certainly looks different from a few days ago. But is it usable?

You've proven yourself to be human, nothing wrong with that. I tried to be non-offensive in my reply. I may have failed miserably. Sorry.

So, are we stuck with an inferior version?

There are several add-on versions available. I guess that I will go on the hunt today.

Thanks for tossing out a lifeline.

Give Free Virtual Keyboard a try.
It's portable so if it isn't suitable, just delete it.

You might also try the PC manufacturer's website. Do a search for your model name/number and sort the results by date, newest first. If the website has a community forum, I'd also re-post this question there (be sure to include the model # of your PC and the build version of Windows that's currently installed, such as 1803 or 1809). To find the Windows version number, hold down the Windows Logo key (between fn. and alt), press X and choose "system" from the menu that pops up. When the box titled "About" shows, scroll down to Windows Specifications for the version #.

    Hope this helps.

So you think it could be hardware related? I immediately start thinking that it's a universal problem (something that everyone that got the update is experiencing) or that it's software related because the on screen keyboard isn't tied to a piece of hardware. Although now that I think about it, the on screen keyboard kind of is tied to the mouse, keyboard, or touch screen.
