Go to Computer Management in Win 7 and ascertain exactly how many hard drives you have and how they are partitioned.

On the assumption that you have only one HDD and from what you have said assume that it is has 2 partitions a boot partition C:\ (with your o/s and programs) and a data partition D:\, then prior to upgrading from Win7 to Win10 I would image the C:\ drive so that if anything goes wrong with your upgrade, then you can revert back to the original partition (of Win 7).

Also I would copy all my data on D: to an external HDD (including the newly saved image of C:\) just to be on the safe side.

There are many imaging software programs available for this.

Imaging is relatively straightforward but if you have never used such a program before can be a little daunting first.

My strong advice is do not upgrade before you image.

    Good Luck

Ok @Risk , i am taking this slowly. and yes i ONLY have my C: with a D: on it. im waiting to use my ex's external HDD too. i moved from the house over a year ago and $ is tight. i think save image is with system saved, and thats on my D drive. i might just buy a new HD and unplug that during the upgrade. im learning more from ppl like you, cheers very much, jeff

You need to understand that you do not have a C:\ with a D:\ on it.

You have 1 HDD which has two volumes (partitions). The 1st one is your boot partition C:\

The other partition is D:\ where you store your data. They are separate of one another and appear as 2 icons in My Computer

Don't understand. Unless you have used partition imaging software this will not be the case unless you are talking about Windows System Restore, which I have never relied on.

You will need imaging software such as Acronis, Partition Wizard or other. I have never used those but instead only rely on one called Images for Dos from Terabytes Unlimited which is a very spartan boot disc.

For newcomers to imaging I would recommend AOMEI Backupper. For others I recommend Macrium Reflect. Both are free. You do need an external hard disk to store the image file. You cannot store it on your Windows drive.
