How do you know when to truly trust a downloaded file.

I’m in the process of switching OS and I’m updating and downloading a number of freeware applications. I’ve been checking these on virustotal.com and most are fine. However, a few applications show one or two threats. Most of the sixty plus company’s are showing clean, but does this mean the few company’s that show threats are likely to be false positives.

Also, some tests have been 100% clean, but the community tab has shown negative comments.

I’m installing on an offline desktop, so don’t need security software, but still don’t want to load infected apps.

Not all official sites include checksums, so how exactly can you truly trust a file when even official site downloads can show threats on virustotal ?

    Just interested in opinions.

Firstly, all files hosted by MajorGeeks are downloaded and installed in a virtual machine prior to making them available for download by users. Warnings appear on the details page of any additional software (adware, pups, etc) that can be installed with the program. While the additional software are not malware, they are often unwanted.

Secondly, the 1 or 2 flags on VirusTotal are false positives and are usually detected by second rate virus engines.

Thirdly, you can always download from the publisher but you won't be warned of any additional software that may install.

When I download something from a site other than MajorGeeks, I generally right click it and have both my av. MS Security Essentials and malwarebytes scan it. If they both find nothing suspicious in it, I trust it.

Generally follow what plodr has said ie scan file with AV and anti-malware progs. If I still feel particularly uneasy, I will install it in a VM and inspect it further
