    Hello:)
I am trying to upgrade a Windows Vista Ultimate laptop to Windows 7 Ultimate. 64 Bit.
I've research a lot and apparently I can providing it's Ultimate to Ultimate version.
I've tried 2 ways. Starting laptop, inserting Windows 7 Ultimate disc and run setup.exe but gives me the message in the first photo.
I then tried booting from the disc and I get the message in the second photo.

Ideally I'd like to not have to do a clean install.
Apparently I can buy a Windows 7 Ultimate Upgrade DVD but that's another added expense and I'm not confident that will work either.

This laptop is used by my autistic 9 year old twin so I need to get it upgraded as soon as possible but cost is an issue.

    Happy Mother's Day to me;)

    Thank you in advance.

I'm not 100% sure but following the second picture advice should do it, but you should preserve your ability to revert if it goes wrong. To do that you need to create a full disk image first for which I recommend using the free Macrium Reflect. You would need an external drive on which to store the disk image file.

Thank you:) The problem is I have tried it both ways.

Being able to recover if this goes wrong is vital, or you may end up with no usable system at all. Ask if you need further advice on creating an image.

I'm so sorry but I may not be explaining myself properly‍♀️
I'm following the instructions to upgrade. It's the same platform, Vista Ultimate to 7 Ultimate. I'm inserting the 7 CD when laptop is powered on. Choosing the upgrade option but I get the message "Windows installation cannot be started from the current operating system. To install Windows, boot from the installation media, or upgrade from a supported operating system and restart the installation". When I do it the way it suggests, I get the message in my second photo.

The point I am making is that upgrading from Vista to Win 7 is inherently risky and that before doing so it is vital to create a restorable image of the system as it is now. This is done with imaging software and I would recommend Macrium Reflect for that. MR is free for private use. Do not proceed until this has been done.
