Suddenly, my ASUS built in battery no longer charges. Do I try tearing it apart to replace it or just buy a new computer? ( And yes, I have tons of music CD's that will go to waste since most new laptops don't have CD/DVD players. )

Nah...but thanks. I think the battery itself died. I don't recall how old this system is....came with 8.1. So it is old....already replaced the power converter a good while back...( Last year?) so just went ahead and ordered a new battery. It looks to be fairly simple to replace.

Battery's are pretty easy to replace.Just make sure you got the right kind.In this day and age. Some times it's just cheaper to buy a new one than replace parts.

How old is your laptop tim....

My HP has been powered on for nearly a full year and no issues.Seems kinda odd that a battery would fail like that.Sounds like a major hardware issue that Asus has.

Wile....I stated that when I got it, it ran Win 8.1 .....it was a while later that MS offered the free upgrade to Win10.....that should give you some idea.

Did you test the charger to see if it was outputting power?

Ah, well then the charger/psu is working.

    Note sure what to say.

    [Rant on]
I think there should be a law that says batteries in all consumer electronics (tablets, cell phones, electric razors, remotes, UPS, electric toothbrushes, [fill in the blank] should be user replaceable. I don't care if it adds a milometer in depth and a couple grams in weight to accommodate the connector. And those batteries should be industry standard types and not proprietary too.

    Oh well.
    [Rant off].

No doubt, for a nice fee, you can return it to an authorized service center. If really handy with your hands and a soldering iron, and you can find a compatible replacement (likely the tricky part), and you know how to strategically place your tongue when disassembling and putting it all back again, I am sure you can do it yourself.

My tongue is no problem...and after removing the top, the battery is easily accessible and just snaps out. Plus $16. is hardly a prohibition to try DIY> :)

Got the battery. Now, when should I change it? First thing in the morning? Before lunch? After my nap....before dinner.....when no one is around to hear me scream??

Done!! Very simple and battery is charging. Only problem was a tiny white plastic piece to lock down the touch pad ribbon .... came off....can barely see it and can't get it back on....but a was going to do a bitch about how the latest Win10 updates screwed my ability to disable the touchpad!! So.........Yea!!!
