    Hi

my partner's computers lags and freezes whilst trying to use Filmora to edit go pro videos and watch them back.

He has a Dell precision M4500, I7 Processor, 8GB ram, NVidia Quadro fx 880m.
    , windows 10.

    • I have gone through the read and run me first to check for malware and found nothing.
    • I have replaced the thermal paste as when I used speccy the temperature was going above 90'c when being used and was reaching 70+ when idle. now it idles at around 50 and doesn't go above 70 in use, at the same time clearing out all the masses of dust in there.
    • I have reinstalled the graphics drivers.
    • heaven benchmark is poor at around 120 with fps at 7, XTU benchmark is around 160
    • I've defragged it, disabled speedstep, checked boot programs, uninstalled all unused programs, set everything for max performance.
after playing around with some things it worked perfectly for like a day then went back to being crappy and laggy again.

I'm out of ideas! can anyone help? is it a case of needing a newer shinier computer or have a missed something major and easy :)

So you cleaned you're system out by scanning for virus and malware. That's a Good start.

    Let's try this option next.

Open you're start menu and then Type CMD or command prompt.Right click on the icon and make sure it's Administrator rights.

Now while the black box is open type this command line. chkdsk /f

This message below will show up

Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another
process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be
checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N)

Press Y for yes and hit enter and then reboot you're system.

    This will take time.

    Hey Thanks for the reply.

I did that and there seemed to be no errors. I have saved the log and attached it for your perusal!

    Keep Task Manager open.
When the PC is lagging, look at the CPU & RAM usage.

The Dell Precision M4500 is far from ideal for video editing.
    • The CPU is too slow (1.6GHz & 6MB cache) and has been available for almost 10 years.
    • The video card has just 1GB of RAM
    • The OS was upgraded from Windows 7.

If you want to take a relatively cheap gamble, I would advocate what wile e coyote said and try installing an SSD. I presume that you currently have a HDD.

The reason I say this is because on your utilisation screenshot, I can see that HDD usage is at 97% and was high before (although not for the same length of time as the high CPU usage).

Rather than spending a considerable amount of money replacing this laptop, a cheap SSD will cost you a fraction of the price.

The other thing is that it is my understanding if I am not mistaken that the M4500 much like the M4600 has 2 VGAs.

One is embedded in the chipset, Intel QM57 Express Chipset, and the other being the Nvidia Quadro FX1800M.

    https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ark/products/43187/mobile-intel-qm57-express-chipset.html

The Intel one handles all the low level requirements and hands over to the Nvidia VGA for more stress related activities. Although the Nvidia VGA only has 1GB of ram, it will draw from system ram also when necessary.

I am currently looking to buy a used Dell laptop and have seriously looked at and researched the M4600 so am fairly confident about the presumptions above regarding the M4500 ie 2 VGAs, etc.

Eldon, where did you see that this laptop has a i7 1.6Ghz cpu, which I presume must be a quad-core Sandy Bridge?

    Good Luck
