So I'm building a media center, in which I'll need about 5-6 terabytres of space to hold everything. In putting this together last night, I got a little worried. I went to buy a 5 TB HDD from my PC store and the thought hit me "what if this dies, I'll lose everything in one shot."

So I started thinking of ways to mitigate the damage in case of HDD failure. I was thinking about buying 5-10 smaller USB drives, then just hooking them all through a USB hub. I thought about getting a internal enclosure I could just hot-swap drives from.

There must be some easy way to slice up this HDD space so that if one dies, I only lose a small chunk of my data and not all. What is the best method?

What you want is a RAID setup. The striping of the array allows for one drive to fail, and be replaced without data loss.

No matter what you need a backup of anything you care about and preferably one which is offline meaning not attached except when doing the backups.
If you create a new volume using disk management, you have the option of assigning it a new drive letter or to mount it in any empty folder; but, ironically, two drives doubles your chances of a hardware failure and three+ increases that.
I buy new drives now based upon their warranty and reviews as most of the old time manufacturers have been bought by Seagate or WD.
